Is anyone out there familiar with this airport? What is the best FBO to use if I want to just pick somebody up for an airplane ride? I will be flying over from Cable - CCB

I used to use Sunrise because my buddy was a CFI there and I parked free.

Ralph, there are two FBOs on the east side of the runways at John Wayne, Atlantic Aviation and Signature Flight Support.

I trained at Sunrise. They don't have ramp access, so it may be prior to the fencing, or Henning may be thinking of Atlantic since it's right next store to Sunrise, they have a friendly relationship with Sunrise, and they do have access.

In a bit of irony, my son wasn't allowed to drive on the airport until he was 18, so he used to walk through Atlantic get to the Sunrise plane he was freely allowed to operate, taxi and fly next to the commercial passenger planes. Go figure.

East side. Good. That's on the short runway side, which is what they will probably give me, correct?

Won't have to cross over the big runway.

If you come in over the Santa Ana Canyon and then El Toro, SoCal Approach will usually direct you to Signal Peak and then tower will direct you to fly left traffic for runway 20L, the little one.

If it's not busy, sometimes SoCal or tower will give you a straight-in for 20L, and you would angle in to the extended centerline by flying past the blimp hangers on the way in.

Note that if you fly the regular pattern from Signal Peak, you're supposed to turn from base to final so that you arrive on short final at a 15 degree angle to the runway. The goal, it seems, is to keep the GA planes out of the final for 20R.

Here's some pilot info from the airport admins:

I use Atlantic, they used to give you a fee-free quick-turn for angel flights, which I always appreciated, even if I had to fight for it. :)

This may be a little overkill, but... if you use Alantic Aviation, this may help your friend find you.

The "Park Here" area is shared by a number of different businesses, including Sunrise Aviation, OC Flight School, etc., so anybody can park there without issue:
