Job Posting - Airport Director

Gotcha. So, you talked yourself out of the job before considering applying.

It's easy to come up with why you can't do something. Jesse and I both have managed to do things based not on experience, but based on stubbornness and refusing to listen to people who told us no. Many others on this forum who've done the same.

Yup...

Try stuffing a V-8 Ford into an airplane....:yikes:......:hairraise:.....:D

My goal is starting a whole airplane company.

We'll only make twins, though... as you'd expect. ;)

Ex marine corsair pilot, took over as FBO of small WW2 government built airport. Slowly, very slowly , Built it into a nice living doing charter work, daily shuttle to D.C. , etc. finally driven almost nuts by " town board of experts" ( read local drones and gas bags) who met monthly to decide how best to run the airport! ( one of their suggestions was to build a pond at the runways intersection so Canada geese could use it and passengers would like seeing them! Another was to build a nice fireplace in the terminal building so pilots could warm themselves as well as passengers.) neither passed but lots of time consumed with this type B.S. In many cases its thankless work with lots of political hicks involved.

Can't say it couldn't happen here but we have an unusual organization. The director is a city department head reporting to the mayor. Neither of the mayors that I have worked for have tried to run the airport and I'm very optimistic about the one that just got elected (have observed him for 4 years as a councilman). The "commission" is a seven member advisory board without authority. All commission members are pilots and those that don't have planes (except 1) have had them. They have varying business backgrounds or areas of expertise. They are useful.

As long as you put diesels that can be overhauled in them...we have a winner :)

I'll start out with MoGas (91 from your local gas station, Gecko style) that can also use 100LL. Then I'll move to diesels that can burn Jet A or pump diesel.

Who wants to fund me? :D

Sure but you gotta make it LSA legal and amphibous(just get a FAA waiver for the extra motor, seats, and weight.) Plus folding wings and it has to drive like a car on land and motor like a ski boat on the water.

You start your own project then. :)

Let me know when the prototype is done. I can fly it around Nebraska a bit. Pretty much any airplane that comes into Nebraska that isn't based here will break down. Best testing grounds.

Plus we have a great red headed airport kid that's damn good at pointing out all the flaws in everything. He should be your first hire.

Here. I did all the design work for you. Twin engine and runs on either MOGAS, or AVGAS. Where do I send you my invoice? :D

I'll make sure to file those suggestions in the "set on fire" bin.

You can send it wherever you want, but it won't get paid. Especially since that plane doesn't meet any of the other requirements. ;)

Congrats on the third retirement! Maybe the third time is a charm. :D

You've improved the airport by leaps and bounds since I started flying a few years ago. I hope the new manager is as nice about the crew car as you have been.

They have one of these at APA now. My hangar neighbor at FTG is one of the owners. Haven't had the chance to ask him yet about how it's working out.

Kind of like applying for a job if you dont fulfill the stated requirements.

Oh, aren't you the picky one!! That's the last time I'll spend 1.35 minutes on one of your projects!! ;)

Thing with a job is that you can convince them that you can do a great job in spite of not meeting the bulletpoints. If "Must seat 6" is a requirement and the plane only has 4 seats, well, I got a welder and a sawzall...

In my 35 years at the airline, I went up against a few people who were (on paper) more qualified than I was, for the job in question. My attitude, interviews, answers, and enthusiasm won. That got me in the door, after which I had to perform. Getting results opened up the door to the ladder and over the years I went up. Being a General Manager of a city operation responsible for many airline flights a day and a hundred employees can be a handful and a hugely rewarding experience.

It also put me in the position of doing the hiring. I learned I would much rather be on that side of the interview table. I hired the people who had drive, enthusiasm, goals, preparation, empathy. Only one of my hires over the years did not work out.

It all starts with your willingness to go for that first job. Do it right and build on it. Do not be discouraged if at first you do not succeed.
