Hey everyone, been a while since I posted last. How have things been around POA?

Things got rough around here for me. I was taking Instrument lessons and had to stop a few months ago due to costs. I planned a job switch that would fix a few issues but that too fell through so I'm back at my old job. Its been 2 and a half months since my last flight and I'm itching to get back in the air.

My CAP Squadron is having O-Flights for my Cadets and I'm thinking about renting the old 172 I rent from time to time, but I'm not sure if I should go up with a CFI being that its been a few months since I've been up.

What do you guys recommend? CFI or no CFI?

I'd say it's really up to you assuming the FBO renting the plane doesn't require more frequency. If you feel you'd be comfortable flying the 172, just go for it. But take your time getting ready and don't attempt something really challenging out of the box like a short obstructed runway or a nasty crosswind. Chances are you'll feel right at home by the time your wheels leave the ground.

OTOH, if the thought of going solo after a few months hiatus makes you apprehensive, then by all means hire a CFI for a few laps around the pattern and/or some airwork.

Its mostly landings that I feel I might be the problem. After being out of the air for so long I fear my landings will be rough, although I doubt they will be all that bad if I focus on Altitude and Airspeed.

I just got back after a month layoff and my landings sucked. I doubt a CFI would have changed anything. Airplane still works fine, only casualty is my ego. Go for it. If you have to get a CFI every time you're a couple months off, you may never get to fly again. Sounds like that's how it'll be for you, so go fly.

I have no problem getting a CFI to fly along to check out my TO&Ls. Plus many FBOs require a checkout if you have not flown THEIR planes for some [generally insurance related] time length. My local is 60 days. You might not have a choice.
The more hours you have the less the fine tuning wears off. You might also adjust you minimums to account for your layoff until you've had a chance to buff off the rust.
