Is flying a tailwheel plane that different?

Watching the youtube 'expert' tailwheel pilots I could swear the proper technique is to lift the tail as high as possible as soon as possible and then slam it down to the ground hard as you force the mains in the air. :stirpot:

Sounds like the Valdez STOL contest.
 
I've had exactly one flight in a tail-dragger. It was my CFI spin endorsement hop which we did in a really nice Super-D. With another 200-ish guy instructing from the back seat, I found the ground handling very different, but also very manageable, compared to the 172s/Warriors/Seminoles I'd been flying. My one and only tail-dragger landing? According to the instructor/OWNER, a perfect three-pointer -- but with one little flaw: I made it about 3-4 feet above the actual runway... THAT was embarrassing.
