While studying for my ATP written I came across a in-cockpit weather service I've never heard of called FISDL. Apperently it's a VHF download service for basic text and graphic weather information.

Golly.. Beaver doesn't that sound a lot like the newer FIS-B data ?

Is this a failed FAA weather product that the industry never accepted ? The latest news article I could find was from Oshkosh in 2000...

FISDL is being "transitioned" to service over the 978 MHz UAT (i.e. ADS-B). Honeywell was the contractor who set up a demo in 2002 but by 2005 it was officially on it's way out.

It FISDL'd out when the marketing dept figured out they could rename everything ever to touch a cockpit as "NexGen" and make it sound cool. ;)
