Hello all my name is Cam. I am a private pilot and just got my float plane license. I might have a chance to relocate to Irving TX and was wondering what airports are the best in the area. I also would like to know if any of the lakes around the area are seaplane friendly. Thank you.

"Which airports are the best in the area" kinda needs a bit more context to answer the question the right way.

But closest to Irving that will help you is Grand Prairie Municipal. Very GA Friendly. @Mitch817 has a Tiger based there and can answer questions.

As far as seaplane friendly lakes.... not sure.... but I'd be crazy careful and find good surveys of the local water spots... Many places are reservoirs with lots of logs and underwater trees. Not to mention lots of boaters and watercraft during warmer months. And none of the lakegoers are used to seaplanes, so they are going to be a hazard in their own right.

When you are headed this way, give us a heads up and we will try to meet you for dinner/drinks.

Thanks for that info. I just saw all of the lakes around the greater Dallas & Fort Worth areas and was hoping some were open to seaplanes. The only seaplane base in the state that I could locate is over near Houston but I was hoping other lakes near DFW were at least "friendly". I read that Texas has a pretty friendly law in that regards but that local authorities are not always so welcoming.

Do you have a seaplane or access to one?

Generally if a power boat can use the water way a seaplane can too

Here’s a few places to start.

Need to be a member, good magazine and cause worth joining

Good app for boating and seaplane stuff, little expensive, but it’s like foreflight for water

Recently got my seaplane rating and am thinking real hard about buying an amphib in the near future. So knowing whether a future location has opportunities to land on water is a consideration.

Thanks for the links.

Guys from T67 land on Eagle Mountain Lake all the time. I'm not aware of any seaplane bases in North Texas.

Most fun flying you’ll ever have, I highly recommend it.

Here’s what’s showing for TX, though there are likely some rivers and lakes and such they are good to go, just not on here, and vise versa

[@Mitch817[/USER] has a Tiger based there and can answer questions.

Actually, the Tiger belongs to me, but Mitch also flies her.

Kathy (@texashikergal02 ) has a most excellent Tiger and she and I have flown grummans together for more than 10 years out of GPM with great success. We love our airfield.

GPM is very GA friendly. Good field, good tower guys, good FBO. Fuel on the truck as well as self-serve fuel. We do have a VERY busy flight school on the south end of the field and the FBO is yet another flight school that stays busy, so we have our fair share of traffic. Joe Pool is just south of our field, I don't know what the restrictions are on there. But our airspace can get busy at times and Joe Pool is on the approach corridor for both GPM and GKY airports so perhaps not the best place to play land a floatplane. (shrug) Your mileage may vary.

Welcome to the area! We'll all have to get together sometime. What type of seaplane are you thinking about getting?

Mitch

Hi Mitch. Thanks for the info on GPM. I’m not sure yet what type of seaplane I will get. I’m thinking of starting a thread on that subject.
