So my instructor tells me to plan my IR cross country. Ok!

Here's my question, I'd like to go someplace I have not been. I am flying out of KSGR and I'm looking for ideas/suggestions to do my required approaches and maybe have a restaurant or two along the way.

Thank you for any suggestions

What sort of avionics do you have? GPS and/or ADF, or just VOR/ILS? That affects the choices.

In any event, down that way, I really like the restaurant at Hooks (DWH), and the one up at Brenham (11R) is also popular. Great burgers up at Tyler (TYR), too -- did that on the long IFR XC out of Houston about two years ago (http://www.skylinecafe.org/).

I second the suggestion about the Skyline Cafe in Tyler. Good food.

And a nice aviation museum near the cafe.

Thanks Ron
I have vor ADF ILS

I like the Tyler idea.
You've got the ILS 13 and VOR 31 approaches from which to choose there, but Brenham is out (need GPS or DME there) and there's only one (LOC 17R) for you at Hooks. And you can do the ILS 7 or VOR 33 (whichever you don't do at Tyler) at Lufkin on your way up/back. Throw in the LOC 35 at SGR coming home, and the squares are filled.

FYI: The cafe is in the old terminal. Which is at the notch of the "V" formed by the two northern runways and at the base of the tower (see diagram)

The new passenger terminal is in the SW corner.

You could also head SW and check out Jay's place.

If you're coming up this way why not get the most out of the trip in terms of experience vs. just meeting the requirements?

How about leave in the morning come up shoot an approach into Dallas Exec.(KRBD) this gives you DFW Bravo experience, an approach, stop and get gas there if you want it's cheap. Then head over to Greenville-Majors (KGVT), that is where they have a giant L3 avionics facility and do work on all the AWACs and whatever other military stuff. GREAT approaches, very experienced but bored controllers, giant runways, and usually NO traffic, interesting place. Then over to Tyler for lunch and then home.

I went to KSEP this week for one of my stops for my ir 250 and ate at hard 8 BBQ. Expensive but really really good!!

I spent a lot of time at majors this week shooting approaches and holds. He experience I got around dfw was great as I am from a small town. The radio was nuts but I eventually caught on. Great time!! To bad I didn't have time to enjoy anything else.

Good job. Getting the experience to feel comfortable flying anywhere is so important IMO. Next time you come let us know.

I forgot I do have DME also.

So many good choices!
Thanks for the great suggestions. Ones I don't do on my IR will be added to the "gotta go" later list.

Going to Hard8 makes doing W&B calculations easy. What you burn in fuel getting there, you replaced with BBQ for the trip home.

You outta ask your CFI for some XC practice to Lockhart, Lufkin, & Llano. See if the instructor catches on that you're doing the aviation version of the BBQ trail tour. (Kreutz's Market, Smittys, Cooper's, etc)

Isn't there a airport restaurant at New Braunfels ? So many places to eat......so little useful load. :)

Yeah I ate so much I was glad we had to walk back to the airport. Very good food. Sorry I didnt get up u all. I was so busy it was insane. I stayed with my parents and only saw them in passing.

Not to change the thread but I just had this thought/question. While doing the hood work with a safety pilot can passengers go too? Back seat of course.

I don't believe there is any prohibition to that. Just make sure they are properly briefed. I'd also be ready to hit the CREW switch on the intercom if their conversation becomes a distraction to you.
