iPhone texts

It appears that my iPhone will only sent and receive texts from another iPhone.

How can I correct this? I'm with Verizon if that makes a difference.

Go to SETTINGS
Select iMessages App
Turn ON "Send as SMS"

Are you sure you're not sending to someone who once had an iPhone (and the number registered with iMessage) who forgot to turn it off when they stopped using their iPhone?

Wouldn't harm anything. You'd just get SMS until you turned iMessage off and back on again. Phone automatically re-registers in that case.
