iPhone 6 Madness

Why are people so insane? I have one in my hand. It is syncing as I speak.

Went online casually last Friday am at my carrier.

Got a prompt to upgrade.

Went to the site, entered the phone into the shopping cart. Fedex delivered it this am.

I guess people really are that stupid. . . .

I'm getting one too, but since I'm also switching carriers I figured I'd wait a few weeks to check deals/bugs/etc. And be able to hold a 6 and 6+ in the store to make sure which one I want.

It's not like I don't have a perfectly good working phone already. I am wondering what those people who were in line for ~2weeks do for a living

I love how the first person to buy one dropped it immediately...

I stopped by my local Verizon stored owned by a friend to see them first-hand. It's an impressive little device.

Sadly, he'd gotten an unexpectedly large shipment in yesterday, 20 more than he was expecting. So, of course, I had to get one.

By way of background, I'm a long-time Android fanboy. But Google has been p***ing me off left and right lately and I'd finally had enough. When they disabled my ability to access it when plugged into my PC I was annoyed. But when they inhibited my ability to move my data around they crossed a line for me, so Apple gets my business this time around.

So, a PIREP. Fit and finish is superb, as expected. Screen is awesome. I really wanted a Plus, but was sufficiently impressed by the regular that I decided to give a try. Setup and transfer of data was pretty simple and automatic. One issue: You have to go through the setup on your voicemail box since Apple has their own extensions for voicemail. Good news is old voice mails transferred over once setup.

In operation, it's FAST. ForeFlight screens just snap....similar to the iPad Air and maybe slightly better (although it's so fast on the Air who'd complain??) Everything is buttery smooth. I love the fingerprint unlock and app store purchase confirmation feature. That truly rocks.

Another great new feature is the Family Sharing plan means you don't have to rebuy apps for every user in your house....up to six phones can share one app purchase. Not sure how THAT works with the ForeFlight folks!! I guess we'll see.

Now the downside: It burns through the battery like there's no tomorrow. :-( I started at something like 88% at 9 am and by 4 pm I was down to 20% and getting warnings with only a handful of calls lasting less than 30 minutes, if that. That's pretty anemic. In fairness, I was busy installing and configuring apps and moving a fair amount of data, including four states of ForeFlight data. I then had a 1.5 hour flight with flight tracking turned on (although didn't have the screen on most of that flight...just had it running.) I then left ForeFlight running in the background for the next few hours, not thinking about it.

According to the new battery usage meter in iOS, ForeFlight alone chewed up 45% of my battery. So that's a HUGE batter drain. I'm curious how much was the data downloading vs. the in-flight usage? Only time will tell.

I'm seriously reconsidering going for the Plus. It supposed has much better battery life, despite the larger screen. I've already given my dealer a heads-up I might not be happy with the small one. But I'm going to give it a week.

Google's going to have to really get their act together, then create some killer alternative to win me back. At least until Apple does something equally dumb and ticks me off. Which they certainly could do.

Thanks for the pirep.

Will certainly end up with a 6 or a 6+ (upgrading from a 5s), but probably do it after the commotion dies down - maybe around the holidays.

Loren, since you can track battery usage, I'd like to see your results when you switch to airplane mode to squelch the internal cell and GPS antenna and the switch back on WiFi only to connect to your Stratus2. And then dim the screen brightness to the least amount you need.

I've been doing that recently for both phone and Pad and have seen a noted decrease in battery consumption.

Yep....all tests I intend to run. More details as I get them.

No hurry, don't have too have the newest ,when it comes out. Will probably get a 6 + at a later date.

Sorta thinking same... Especially as I get more into flying in the IFR system and want another layer of redundancy after the Maxi Pad.

*sigh* "Gone to the Dark Side, he has..."

For me, battery life (or lack thereof) is the is the biggest PITA about these phones. Especially when using the GPS.

If the new phone is even worse than the old, then I most definitely will NOT be upgrading.

You can always pop another battery in.

Oh, wait...

The "wall hugger" commercial for one of the Samsung phones was one of the more clever ones of recent times.

Agree. I did notice I had some other battery sucker things. I recharged late this afternoon. With modest use and no ForeFlight it only used 14% over five hours. That's probably acceptable.

But now you can tell which programs are sucking the battery more than others. Go to settings > general > usage > battery usage. I don't remember being able to see that before. I updated my 5 with iOS 8 this morning and haven't noticed any problems so far.

Yup, there's a lot of features like that Apple has finally gotten around to. Been doing that on my Moto X for a year now. Data too.

Yup, used that a lot trying to try and figure out the slowdowns, freezes and other glitches between forced reboots on my Motorola RAZR.

OOOOOHH!!! NIIICE!!! Thanks for posting that this was part of iOS8. I just found that on my 5 and am really digging it.

I'm flying on a training flight tomorrow... be interesting to see between Cloud Ahoy, FF, and other bits what has a heavier drain on the battery.

By way of background, I'm a long-time Android fanboy.

I was an Apple fanboy a few years ago, but used an android phone and loved the customization of the software. So how is going back to that static software that basically doesn't do anything other than open apps? No weather widgets, etc. I know ios has some kind of widgets now, but only in the notification screen. I've thought about it, but don't know if I can handle ios again and static functionality.

How does the Motorola RAZR even make it into this thread. I didn't bring up the jacked up buggy whip I bought from American Buggy Whip Corp.

Buy yourself the anker 13,000 mAMP external battery. Then the only wall hugging you'll need is when that sucker gets drained to zero. What? A week? I have a 10,000 mAMP ERA. Recharges in an hour. Jumpstarts most of my devices. Unfortunately (for me) it is usually in my briefcase at home when I'm 100 miles away.
Most times, I disable auto update features and save any downloads to when I am home and on WiFi. Having bricked a Garmin when the battery died during an upgrade, I never do software updates unless I am plugged in.

Nah, no Dark side or Light side....just two alternatives that accomplish pretty much the same thing.

Agreed. Though you have to admit that AAPL has built itself an almost cult-like following, by design.

My goal was to have something that works consistently. We'll see if they'll accomplish this for me. Google was failing at it. I'm currently a skeptic of both platforms for different reasons, but Blackberry isn't an option, which leaves only Windows as a possible future refuge. But no one has done an EFB for the Windows phone that I am aware of.

Maybe because the iPad purchased at the same time continues to work flawlessly, so the comparison is inevitable. :dunno:

Thanks. I'd appreciate a report when you've used it enough if you miss the Android platform's customization and widgets.

"Apple sells a record 10 million cellphones over the weekend."

Proving once again that PT Barnum was a very wise man! :goofy:

I drove by the Verizon store on my way to work at 8:00 friday morning. There were only about 10 people waiting so I stopped. They were already out of the 6+ but I wanted just the 6 anyway. Waited about 30 minutes, got 3 new Iphone 6's for my family. Biggest delay was their refund system for getting credit for my old Iphone 4's was overloaded and going very slow for them.

Battery life on the 6 is much better than my iphone 4.
