A year after our first usability study of iPad apps, it's nice to see that iPad user interfaces have become decidedly less whacky. It's even better to see good uptake of several of our recommendations from last year, including apps with:

  • back buttons,
  • broader use of search,
  • homepages, and
  • direct access to articles by touching headlines on the front page.
Even so, this year's testing still found many cases in which users accidentally touched something and couldn't find their way back to their start point, as well as magazine apps that required multiple steps to access the table of contents.

Interesting stuff to keep in mind when developing apps.

If every developer would start by reading and memorizing Apple's Mobile Human Interface Guidelines, they'd do pretty well.

As for magazine apps - They need to remember that "content is king." The best UI is the one that the user doesn't even notice because it makes so much sense. Unfortunately, too many "designer" types that you find around magazines and such are too focused on flashy graphical crap. (Anyone who writes a web site with a "Skip Intro" button - Or which lacks one but has an "intro" anyway - Should be shot.)

Same here... any of the above gets a "close window" event as soon as I see/hear them.
