Hello,
Just wanting the input of people who use either an iPad or the Samsung galaxy for helping with planning flights or even using while in flight. I'm a student at SIUC aviation program and I'm looking to get a tab for general school stuff as well as aviation apps and planning. You're help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have always gone with the cheaper PC rather than Apple products. But after doing similar research to what you are doing I bought the newest I Pad with 64GB about 6 months ago. I really enjoy the Foreflight App with the I Pad. Is Foreflight or something comparable available on the Samsung? Foreflight is fabulous!

The tablet is arguably the most significant change in aviation since the GPS...
There are two basic camps: Android or iPad. Since the iPad had a head start, all aviation-related APPS were primarily on the iPad. In the last couple of years that has changed, with many good aviation apps being developed on both platforms. However, the two best comprehensive "moving map" apps ForeFlight and WingX, are only available for the iPad.
I'm not a huge Apple fan, but have found that iPad still has the most momentum, and I purchased another iPad (mini) for my aviation stuff. But that being said, there are MANY good Android tablets and Android Aviation Apps. The Samsung tablets are good, but the aviation community seems to have jumped on the Nexus 7 with a fervor. They have all the needed hardware (then some), are cheap, and aren't loaded with a bunch of crapware. (I also have a Nexus 7).

Keep in mind when comparing everything that Apple wilp require you to waste extra money getting the tablet with 3g because they screw you out of the GPS if you go wifi only. I am not aware of anything in the Android line with that same dumb restriction.

I get more use out of my ipad than child labor...

In reality, I understand when people don't want "what everybody has" or doesn't want to spend more money on something because its hot in the market right now. To me it's worth it. I've tried android and I am not a fan. It is buggy and here in America we often get screwed on the latest updates. Apple indeed is more restrictive and may have less options, but, I don't care. Their stuff works. And foreflight is amazing.

Also, apple products hold their value. I upgrade my phone and ipad every year at maybe $200 out of my pocket after I've sold last years models. Trust me they always sell. I've had every iPhone. Multiples of some, actually. I've had friends give me crap about always having to have the latest iPhone and to that I say nope! I just do it because it makes sense. If it only costs me 80 or 100 bucks to upgrade every year and have the latest tech, why not? I don't own a Mac yet but soon will because of this reason. You just have to make that initial investment. My hp laptop with the mighty i7 processor still seems slow and sits in a corner most of the time. My .02

I have both.. a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and an iPad mini. The iPad new newer, faster and smaller (screen). I use it much more frequently. It's more friendly in the air too. I'm an avid Android phone user, but iPad has won my tablet loyalty.

I had an iPad, and sold it a few days after getting the Nexus 7 tablet. (Made by Asus for Google.) With Garmin Pilot running on it, connected to a Garmin GDL-39 ADS-B receiver, you get moving map sectionals, airport taxi charts, free weather, and traffic information (where available).

It's an amazing and affordable combination that gives you capabilities undreamed of just a few years ago. Best of all, it's an Android tablet that you can take with you and use for...everything...once you've arrived.

I just bought a Nexus 10. I'm sure the 7 is more convenient, but my old eyes will appreciate the larger screen.........At least that is what I think!! I see that it has a barometer. I wonder if that will do anything for me?

Can I use Garmin Pilot on both my phone and tablet for the same subscription price?

WingX and ForeFlight are the top two aviation apps currently on the market. They only run on an iPad. WingX has more hardware options if you want to add ADS-B and AHRS. WingX has Synth Vision that ForeFlight does not have although it costs extra. Wth that said, the Android apps are catching up, but are still lagging behind WngX and ForeFlight. It really comes down to what you can afford cost wise. If money is tight you can save a few bucks with the Android tablets. Otherwise, iPad aviation apps are great.

I would add that if you only use the tablet in the aircraft, and money is no object, an iPad Mini running ForeFlight is the best GA navigation solution right now.

If, on the other hand, money is not unlimited, and you want to use the tablet outside the cockpit for non-flying purposes -- which, in my case, is probably 98%+ of my tablet usage -- the Nexus 7 running Garmin Pilot is the best GA navigation solution.

The new samsung 8.0 when it hits verizon or AT&T will be be the new leader with the aviationmaps app. I will be dumping apple ipad

:yeahthat:

My Nexus 7 has Garmin Pilot, Checkride Prep, My Flightbook, Study Buddy and Runway Scout, all great tools I use daily and outside of the cockpit, it's basically replaced my rolodex, appointment book and smartphone. I'm a little nervous that it's become so essential to my day because I bought it just to experiment with but not to interfere with my flight lessons.

I'm using an iPad 2 wifi only with the dual external gps. Foreflight is a great app and keeps getting better with every update. The newest update for swiping between plates is a great idea along with stitching together procedures that are more than one page so all you need to do is swipe. As for flight planning it is a great tool, especially when you look at winds aloft. You can use it to compare all the winds at the available altitudes for your flight and figure on what is going to give you the best GS, and it will even identify layers of air that may be bumpy due to significant speed changes or directions changes. A friend recently purchased the iPad mini, and as was said already, it is the best iPad for GA flying. With the use of the external GPS you do not need to buy the 3G iPad unless you are looking to actually get service on it.
