So my company just got approved for iPad EFB use for all phases of flight. I cannot find one that I like. I am crossing my fingers that the iPad mini will come out soon, and we get approved for that (so I can get an iPad that will be solely used for work) but until that happens, my iPad is used for work and play. I have a case on it now which is this:

Basically a thin plastic backing with a smart cover like front cover.

My ideal kneeboard would be one that I can just fold the cover back on my current case, and slide the whole package into the kneeboard so I can use the kneeboard for work, get to where I am going, then slip it out to watch movies and do iPad stuff. I would like to have a folding kneeboard type that has room for maybe a notepad, or pockets to put small things in, as well as a pen loop or two.

Since I haven't found the perfect one, these are the ones I am considering:

Does anyone have these kneeboards that can comment on them?

I have the third one you listed. It fits well in a 172 and the tilt feature is nice. There are a lot of reviews saying that its too big, but it works for me. It took a little getting used to because it is wide, but works well. I'm also waiting for the mini. It's supposed to be announced this month, and it would be perfect for mounting to the yoke.

Can you turn it landscape?

Why get a kneeboard? Why not stick with your current one and keep the iPad loose? Lay it either on the empty thigh or over the kneeboard when in use, or between the front seats when not?

I have a Taurus bluetooth keyboard case. It is leather or genuine immitation leather. The IPad folds sort of inside and out. When folded out, the "leather" clings to your lap really good. If you fly a plane with a yoke as opposed to a stick it works quite well. I have flown probably 75 hours or so with it and it works great.

The bluetooth keyboard is really handy when you find yourself surfing or taking care of your email.

+1. When I started flying I had a big fancy folding kneeboard with clips & a kitchen sink. I now use a $3 5x7 clipboard. I just don't get the obsession with mounting your electronic sectional.

I agree, save the money, get a decent case. The iPad doesnt mount to your plane or knee very well.

Well, the cockpit real estate of the Lear leaves something to be desired, so just sitting it down somewhere isn't much of an option. We use them for approach plates as well, so you can imagine trying to fly an approach in bad weather while trying to balance a loose iPad might not be that much fun.

All forum recommendations are based on an individual's experience. I sometimes find the absolute responses (THIS is the best way) somewhat humorous. In my case, loose works well in the Citabria, not at all in the Waco, because if it falls flat, I can't get it until after I land.

I too am hoping the iPad mini is the solution. The full size one can interfere with the stick in some situations.

Ya I couldn't strap it to my knee in either the Citabria or Waco. If I was still regularly flying Citabrias I would probably try to mount it to the plane. I have no idea what I would do in the waco, then again I only flew short acro hops in it. Ours has a 530w though so an iPad isnt really needed.

You might check out the App Strap. Heavy duty no slip elastic band with velcro connecting the ipad to the strap in either portrait or landscape. Or you can just rip it off and put it aside.

1. The Sky High Genesis (3 versions available depending on which ipad model you have and if you want to be able to rotate it from veritcal to horizontal while in use). The Genesis 1 and 2 will probably allow you to keep that generic case on your ipad and still use the kneeboard but I doubt that generic case will work with the Genesis X which is the rotating version.

2. MyGoFlight iPad Folio C - This is the rolls royce of ipad kneeboards - incredibly well made. But at $170 it better be! Again, I doubt you'd be able to keep your generic case on the iPad and use this at the same time.

3. MyClip & MyBigClip - This is just a stramp that clamps on to the side of your ipad but the simplest option is often the best.
