I'm thinking about starting an instrument rating, and have been trying to find iPad -based software but haven't found any solid apps. This thread http://www.pilotsofamerica.com/forum/showthread.php?t=47534 has some ideas but none seem to be good self contained apps, Internet not needed, with practice tests. I've seen several apps that seem to just be digital versions of a book...just a glorified PDF, such as Rod Machado's. Sporty's seems to have an online course (Internet needed), as well as Study Buddy apps and an IPC review app but no full app.

Anything I'm missing here? Or is an e-book plus study buddy app a decent way to go? I'd like to go the iPad route as I always have it with me and can use it during downtime away from home. I'd rather not rely on my iPad's cell connection for content, and don't want to have to track down wifi.

Seems there's a market for a full fledged self contained trainer app with test prep, holding simulators, panel scan practice, etc.

Thanks, will check it out!

I've got the Dauntless SW and I agree it's good, but it is strictly geared to the written test. If you want a broader ground school, you'll need something more.

That said, the Dauntless stuff as test prep is great on the iPad.

I used the sporty's ipad test prep app $15
Bob gardner's 'the complete advanced pilot' $25

After I got the rating I watched the 'advanced weather flying' series which is now available on an ipad for $20 (I paid $40 for the videos) http://www.sportys.com/source/features/search/search.cfm?catalog=PilotShop&keywords=weather+flying

I also read a bunch of books, the two most helpful "Flying IFR" by richard collins and "Weather Flying" by robert buck. Available for about 5 bucks each on amazon
