I use a cellular-enabled iPad mini, and use the built-in GPS. I've had no problems maintaining GPS signal.
My impression is that most people use the built-in GPS, as opposed to a plug-in or Bluetooth external GPS.

But some who use external GPSs seem to think more people use that combination.

So, what do you use?

I have a cellular enabled Ipad just for the GPS but I don't have a data plan for it.

I use the internal GPS right now, but I ordered a Stratus 2, so I'll be using an external one soon. I didn't buy it for the GPS, though.

My first iPad I bought wifi-only due to some reports that the internal wasn't as good. The Bad Elf worked well with it. When I upgraded to an iPad 4 with more memory I went with the 4G LTE and now use the internal. It's worked flawlessly and I like have the data always available. It's worth the $10/mo.

I guess choosing WiFi in the poll also includes using a external GPS communicating via Bluetooth or the Bad Elf model that plugs into the iThing.

When I had a cellular I used the internal,

Now I am wifi only and have a bad elf
