Nice story. And the guy up front does that all the time; first for training and then for real. He and those like him (i.e. - those in uniform) are the folks that we should humbly look to and say thank you with the utmost of sincerity.

And be glad that they do that for you and those you love.
 
sounds like fun. it helps to be in control of the aircraft when you're doing stuff that makes you wanna throw up. most people can only take about 45 min. max of thermalling if they dont get on the controls. i have experienced that. climbing through 10000 MSL in strong thermals, quietly getting sick sack ready, refusing to say anything to my instructor in front seat for fear he would want to land. would've thrown up for a long time before i wanted to stop climbing without an engine
