Well, the common name for a Peregrine Falcon is "Duck Hawk". -Skip

Ive always wanted to try falconery.

Very cool

I did too, but it takes a little more than a test drive to get into it.

It's been a few years, and this was in Montana, but I recall you had to have state? federal? mentor to apprentice you for a year or two. Then you got a license from the state? feds? to own your own after they've done some sort of property check to make sure you had adequate facilities to keep one. You would then go steal a kestrel from the nest as a "starter" bird then move up to the Peregrines after several years. At least that's my half decade old memory of the process.

Well I looked into it as a present for my dad. We were gonna go take a little intro class on it. There is a place about an hour away and for like 100 bucks or so you could go spend a day with an instructor and you would get paired with a redtailed hawk for the day. Practice the basics and get the bird comfy with you and then go out and really fly them. Never got around to ot though.

Way cool.

Our vet does what he can with a wildlife rescue group. He specializes in birds of prey. One morning I stopped by to talk to him about something. He had a small cage in front of him and was putting on welding gloves. I had to see what was in a cage that small that required those gloves. It was a kestrel - a beautiful bird.

Another time i was in the pax seat of my wife's car. We were driving through a park. My window was down and i noticed two doves right on the side of the road, just a couple feet away. They took off, got a couple feet in the air, then one simply exploded. I was pretty stunned, until i noticed it was a red-tail that had slammed into it.

Birds of prey are cool.

I thought it was a thread about that guy who kicked owl.
