I have two[edited] three other pilots listed on my insurance policy. One of them travels a lot re his profession. He has flown with other CFIs when in other states. Is he covered by having coverage on my policy, when taking instruction in other planes? I'm thinking about my automobile policy which protects me if I'm driving another person's automobile. My aviation insurance agency is closed today.

I "think" he is just a named insured on your plane only... Any other plane he is in is on him... Or that other planes owner... IMHO,

I think I would contact my agent. I would not want someone flying somebody else's plane and me even remotely thinking I had anything to do with the liability of that person or the plane they were flying!:yikes:

Your policy may differ, but I am pretty certain my policy only covers me if I am flying my own plane. If I rent another plane I need renter's insurance, and if I use someone elses plane, I do not know who would cover me.

It is most unlikely your coverage includes that situation, but you'd have to look at your policy to be sure. And unless they are additional named insureds on your policy rather than just named pilots, there is no way they are covered by your policy when flying another plane.

This is correct.

Just depends on how the insurance company and how they write their policies.

I use Avemco for the policy on my 170. With Avemco, I am fully covered in any other non-owned airplane I fly (including twins) up to the limits of my policy. But that is for me who the policy is specifically written for. You'd have to read the policy, but I suspect that named folks are not covered the same way.

Thanks for the responses. The policy paperwork wasn't nearby when my "named" pilot emailed me the question from California where he's about to have his first experience in Class B LAX. In a follow-up memo he was of the assumption that my policy wouldn't cover him in other planes. Turns out his was assuming correctly; today my agency sent me the clarification that y'all had expressed. Additionally, my policy cost won't go up, or down, for the next year. The only reason it won't go down is that its cost is based on the lowest-time pilot, and that happens to be the referenced "named" pilot.
