My brother used to have a full-size doberman and a miniature pinscher (spelling?).
When his youngest was born his wife would put the baby on the couch and tell the large dog to 'watch the baby'. The big dog, and he was big, would stand guard. Whenever the little dog would get too close, the bit dog would pick up the little dog by the head and carry it across the room, then return to his guard post.
