inadvertant spyware experiment

I was troubleshooting something last night on my computer and inadvertantly disabled my Webroot Spy Sweeper active shield. This morning I began suffering web page redirects within four minutes of Firefox use. Within 15 minutes I was getting pretty nasty adware with the usual popup windows boxes. Sheesh. This is by simply visiting pretty pedestrian news sites.

Got it turned back on now and sweeping Guess I had forgotten how bad it was out there, sitting fat, dumb, and happy behind the castle walls.

I've been running IE 6 and now IE 7 for the last few years with first party cookies prompted and third party blocked. I use Google pop-up blocker. I've not had a single problem since I began controlling who can put a cookie on my computers.

What also helps is to redirect a lot of websites to 127.0.0.1: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
