In Memoriam Lafayette Escadrille

Cool, those guys were really pilots.
The beginning of Courtney's book "The Eighth Sea" has accounts of some early bombing/recon/fighting.

Routinely it sounded, when out of ammo over sea, they jettison their guns for more favorable aerodynamics.

How odd. Last week I was trying to make sense of boxes of slides and I came across a box I took on a tour of WWI battlefields. It included this memorial. Considering how fragile the machines they flew were it must have taken more than a little courage to take them into combat.

Thanks for the post. It was an amazing episode in WW1 aviation history and yet I had not seen images of the memorial.

I have read 'The Dream of Civilized Warfare' about the Aces of World War One and the Lafayette Escadrille. An interesting tale indeed.

Thanks again,

Owen

Excellent. A piece of history I never knew.
