I suppose I would find the glide rings more interesting if the reflected ground speed. The number of available airports would change.

That's how Garmin Pilot and ForeFlight do it. The ring shifts based on winds.

iFly's glide rings take winds and terrain into account. Also, tapping NRST, then the "!" icon will highlight nearby airports as green/yellow/red based on its real-time estimates of whether you could make it.
