If you thought Air Marshals being arrested was bad

Department of Homeland Security official arrested for child porn. I was listening to the stories about this on the radio this morning. Apparently this guy sent the "child" (in actuality a cop) pictures that included his ID, etc. I can't help but be convinced this guy was using his position to make achieving his goals easier. I hope he hasn't succeeded in the past before running into this cop, but I'm not optimistic.

Cathy and I saw something on TV a little while ago, on 20/20 or 48 Hours, one of the news magazine shows, which we usually don't watch. They were doing a special on on-line pedophiles, apparently the 2nd time they'd done it. This time, they got in cahoots with the cops, and the guys who responded to their "kid" got busted after the reporter got his say. It was nothing short of terrifying how many men showed up just the first day. IIRC, 30 some got arrested.

I have a real good friend who works in a computer crimes division of a LE agency. She spends her days/nights online in chat rooms posing as 12 and 13 year olds and then spends days on end in "stings" when she busts the sicko's she's been chatting with. She can tell you horror stories of the people she's busted, and her division works their tails off to keep up with the work. Once upon a time I considered applying for one of these units, but I just don't think I could be as professional as I should when making those arrests, so I guess it's best that I decided to go into a different division. Takes a very special kind of person to do that job. My hats off to them.

The problem with having too much power (and being in power too long) is that it is very easy to cross the line to corruption.

Me, too. I've done this once as part of an investigation working with a local LE agency who had no IT experience and didn't know where to start. We built the case and successfully prosecuted but I had an extremely hard time with it. I semi-seriously hinted that I'd be more than happy to cut through the BS and take care of it personally after I saw the guy's computer contents.

What really gets me as that, as often as this happens (LE posing as child and nabbing someone), it still must have a reasonable success rate to be willing to take these types of risks.

At my wife's place of employment they wanted to test some security stuff on the computers that kids could access after a person mentioned that it was still possible to get into chat rooms and stuff of an adult nature. Since all of the employees have accounts that let them bypass this security I got the call. I hemmed at why they thought of me when it came to finding adult entertainment on the web and many jokes abounded, so I have heard them all already. But basically since I had no account on their system and was computer literate they asked me.

So one afternoon with staff approval I went onto the kids computers in the kids section and started attempting to participate in chat rooms and download media. I asked to have my wife and another staff person there to shield what we were doing from the public and to explain stuff to parents if anyone happened to see anything. I also did not want any off duty LE to arrest me. It was very strange and I would not want to do it for a living.

BTW I did identify a hole in the security for the IM clients that you can load that allowed me to get into chat rooms and then access even more interesting things such as web cams. But basic web browser access was working with the vaste majority of that type of info unavailable to a user.

Sadly, these pedophiles that are in the news don't scare me as much as the ones who may be smart enough to not fall into the sting. And every time I feel that urge to say "How about the death penalty?"... Sigh.

And that, sir, has been proposed in several states.

I'm one of the lucky old men in the public defender's office that gets to represent on these cases. Always delightful. Seen it all, don't need to see it no more. Heard every excuse on the planet, and seen some bad prosecutions (as in not sustainable) and some good ones (those are usually known as guilty pleas)

Death Penalty will cost so many taxpayer dollars that it would make prosecution astronomical. When all the Megan's Law laws broke back in the 90s, they made failure to register, or change of address without notice, a felony for these guys. After several years of expensive prosecutions and locking these guys up, and many appeals by defense attorneys (some successful and some not), the legislature reduced those offenses to much lower grade misdemeanors. It was just about impossible to prosecute. And Megan's Law itself, in PA, as written by the legislators, has been so poorly written that it has been overturned on various grounds several times. They never have been able to figure out the very simple statutory changes that they could make, which would not be reversed, that would be cheap and effect what they want. Mainly, this Megan's Law activity has simply cost untold millions of taxpayer dollars.

But all these guys who are successfully prosecuted are on internet registrys. All you gotta do is go look for them. If you want that information as a citizen, it is available for you.

Yes, it is. It was a real joy to find some in our little town. No one we know, thankfully.

I'm not so sure that money is the driving factor here.

I live in what you could call "Megan's Town". Megan Kanka lived and died here. I attended several of the rallies afterward, and signed a few of the death penalty petitions. (Her killer is on death row now)

Folks here were rather .... upset. The locals took up a collection, bought Timmendequas' mother's house (where this happened), and TORE IT DOWN. Megan's Place is the name of the new park on that lot.

Don't underestimate the ferocity of a bear protecting cubs.

As a supervisor in a Max A Prison, the worst thing I ever have to do is place these no-good scum into protective custody. I have to interview them and find out way too much about their crime. Because I like my job and don't want to lose a pension after 21 years I pretty much keep my hands to myself, but just so they know how much I despise them, I always clean the desk and pen with a disinfectant while they're still in the office.

I must admit a bit of surprise, and it does not make me happier, because the guy is still an ftard. Does not matter which side of the fence....

I just looked back and didn't see ANYONE mention his political leaning in this thread, and I'm disappointed it was even brought up. It's no more relevant than his hair colour. Scum is scum.

Maybe just Bill S.'s comment about being in power too long. Maybe it was just the tone of the news. A Bush appointee.....no he wasn't.

And note that I said it really didn't matter. A turd is a turd. The problem here is that some folks don't seem to know the difference from a Baby Ruth bar.
