Not while taking a shower. Heh. You should be so lucky. :nono:

For the past few days I've felt like taking some close-up pictures of semi-gross, ordinary items. I don't do much close-up or macro work, and I had nothing else to do today... so this is what I did this morning.

Yeah, I lead a boring life...

Sorry about the watermarks. I'm too lazy to create a new directory for non-watermarked medium-sized pictures. If you actually want 1024s (why, I have no idea), feel free to d/l them from here.

I hovered over the thread title to get the "TEXT ONLY" preview before I clicked.

With the last 2 photos featuring hair, I was expecting to see a follow-up picture of you clean shaven!

Where's the toothbrush?

That's for the next session. I'm also planning on adding some pictures of dirty laundry.

The weather hasn't been good for shooting outside since last Sunday. It's been hovering right around freezing, which tends to make for haze and fog. So I've been looking for indoor things to shoot.

I'm hoping for some clear weather soon. I have a bunch of requests from two railroads, including a couple from on top of some bridges whose spans I haven't been on yet. I like climbing the bridges, and I'm less likely to get arrested doing it when I actually have permission.

But I need a clear day that's not too windy, especially because one of the bridges is a deck truss bridge. They're interesting enough on calm days.

What kind of camera do you use? We use a Pentax K-x and a Nikon 5000.

I've been using a Nikon D5100 pretty much exclusively for about a year. I'm quite satisfied with it. These particular pictures were taken with the stock 18-55 VR lens.

Sure. I have thick skin. :D

Heh, I'm not gonna ream ya a new one. I'm just coming back to more serious photography myself, after a long time off.

I like the composition of the 4th and last ones.

The sponges & soap are dull & low contrast.

I can't tell if it's just the backgrounds or not, but I would check the white balance on all of them. The "hairball" (5th pic) is probably closest to being right out of the whole bunch, but even that seems a tad greenish.

Consider some bigger, brighter, and softer lighting to minimize the sharp shadows.

Clone out that lone whisker hanging off the left side of the razor. I think it would make it a much better shot, drawing the eye to the subject and not the wild hair!

and yeah, get out more! :yikes:

Thanks. I still have the RAW files... maybe I should practice my Photoshop skills.

I can start with the whisker...

Yeah, this is the second of two things boggling my mind -- the plethora of post-processing image manipulation available to us. Curves, white balance, noise reduction, etc. I have not even begun to scratch the surface. A super long way from dodging and burning with the enlarger, or pushing the chemical process.

The other is the ability to switch ISO from shot-to-shot. Last time I did this, I had to stick with one for at least 12 shots, so I'm still of the mindset of trying to get it mostly correct in the camera. :D

If you still have the beard, I don't want to see what you shaved!

Actually, the white balance was pretty close on all the pictures except the hairball. The shower enclosure isn't white. I doctored the background on the hairball to make it white.

I removed the errant whisker and darkened the shadows slightly:

Previous version, for comparison:

The next time I have reason to go to someplace with a real hardware store, I'll pick up some materials to build some backgrounds.

Come spring, I'll have to take some aerial shots.

Just a trim job. I have to get a new picture taken for my DL photo. The one on there is about 15 years old. The guy in the picture looks like my son.

Nothing gross about horses... although that's not my favorite end.

I'll take my camera into the shower sometime. I've got a great view of the runway. Get a variety of things flying by like my neighbors 1939 cabin Waco or the periodic NG Blackhawk.

The window isn't int the shower per se, but the shower doors are clear glass and I can look through them out the window.

I like airplane noise. Its really only noisy when the blackhawks show up. They like to come over and do NVG work on the runway as it's pretty dark here.
