I think it's time to quit Hertz

The last... And I mean last... time I used Hertz I was accused of stealing the car. Got a certified letter saying they'd rented me a car and I'd never returned it, even though it was back for over a month at that point. They said to bring it back and pay them for the month or they'd send the police after me... Luckily, after I called and gave them hell, they "found" it awfully quickly. No apology whatsoever.

There's way too much "stuff" that goes on in the rental car business, especially in foreign countries, to make it worthwhile. I tend to avoid it if I can. Uber/Lyft is best, followed by Turo.
Turo has become my ‘go to’ if I can get a pick up/drop off at the airport. In many instances, it is a financial wash compared to traditional rentals through an FBO, but sometimes I can save a little $ with. I definitely experience much less BS with Turo, however.

I had the same thing happen to me recently. My Company reserved a Hertz to be picked up at the FBO in PVD. I had the Company cancel it as I wasn't going to need it. A month after the date I was scheduled to rent the car I got the certified letter from Hertz. It stated that they had made numerous attempts tp contact me (False as that certified letter was their first attempt) and their next step was to contact law enforcement. When I contacted the national Hertz they were no help. I contacted Hertz at PVD and within the hour they called me back and said that they had retrieved the car from the FBO, where they had left it, and that my record would show that I never had the vehicle and there would be no charges. My recommendation if that there is an issue never contact national Hertz but the local facility.

OP: "I think it's time to quit Hertz"

I totally agree, R.P.M. is so much easier to use, and as a bonus it's easier on my power plant. 2,100 R.P.M. is a nice cruise, but 126,000 Hz is just way too fast.

Bah. Just because it's easy doesn't mean it's the best. I just want the FAA to let me have my airspeed indicator in Hertz per diopter the way God intended.

The only two times (in years of renting from Hertz) that some to mind are 1) I had the worst Hertz rental car in the US Virgin Islands (it was a wreck) and 2) a fight with them when I had a car that got a flat (no idea when) on a Sunday and I had to return it with a spare tire. They wanted to charge me for a new tire, rather than fixing the one that was flat. I offered to pay for the fix, but that wasn't good enough for them. I think I wound up paying nothing after arguing with them for a few weeks. Other than that, no problem with Hertz for years.
Par for the Virgin Islands. Of course, this is an area where they drive on the left side of the road in left-hand drive cars.

Hertz is the only one i often don’t get decent upgrades from, a giant take the kiddies to soccer SUV with body roll like Rosie O’Donnell isn’t a upgrade, BMW, Audi, Challenger, etc are a upgrade

I have top tier status with nearly everyone, I don’t like to spend much renting cars but life is far too short to drive boring cars, so I don’t rent from hertz

Hmm, my 3 rentals over a few have been a Mustang GT, Camaro SS and a Challenger. All were booked as Economy cars.

Had a Tesla reserved with Hertz at LAX, but when I went to pick it up the guy said they didn't have any available.

I looked through an open door no more than 10' away and said "how about that one?"

The agent walked out, got the keys, and checked me out with it.

They supposedly reserved me a Tesla (chosen just because they promoted it on the website when I booked). I got there and there wasn't one, so I just grabbed a nice car from the presdient's circle (or whatever they call it).

The only place I use Hertz is DCA because AVIS at that location is a ****show.

I started this thread a while ago. Quit Hertz, gave them another try, still beyond bad, so I told them to revoke my Gold status and put me on the do not rent list so I don’t even have the slightest temptation to rent from them in the future. Some executive reached out, offering me a bunch of free rental days and what not, I told him to shove his rental days up where the sun ain’t shining. That was my last interaction with them.

Man, you really have to start thinking your product or service is bad when customers literally tell you they won't even use it for free.

Unless you're a bank, car rental company, or airline. Then you double down, apparently, on whatever it is that makes you suck.
