I have been keeping this a secret from you all for the past few months, but I wanted to be sure that I don't jinx it before I even get this news off the ground.

Today was my first day on the job for working for an air cargo handling company at Newark Airport!!! I'm taking on-the-job training for a day or two first though before working in the office. This is only a summer job before I head back to college in August. Hopefully, I can continue to work for them when I am not in school during major breaks.

I actually got this job back in March with a special connection in the aviation industry from my college, but I did not start my job until today.

I believe that it is nearly a full time job. I think it is Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4 pm job, but I will have to check to make sure that it is what they are telling me.

Get there early and leave late. ;)

Good job dude thought you were going somewhere else, which, would have been fine too, but that is a great step in your career

Remembering the first conversations from you on the AOPA board, this sure beats that grocery job someone was pushing you into!

As others are saying, do well at your assignments, and always ask for additional responsibility as you're ready for it. Work hard to impress your superiors. And always make connections to add to your network so you have them as resources for future employment.

Now if two guys approach you, one looking like Ray Liotta and the other like Joe Pesci, and they want the key to a certain Air France storage room....

Congratulations on your summer job.

By way of reminiscing, I worked at JFK when I got out of the service back in the early 1980's. Working at a large international airport can be a lot of fun, especially if you maintain a sense of humor about the organized chaos and occasional bizarreness of it all.

I don't know what your geographical situation is or what your company's policies are, but back when I worked at JFK, many companies were pretty happy to have college students as part-timers and would happily work around their school schedules. Airports are 24/7/365 operations, but some shifts are too lean to justify keeping a crew of full-timers sitting around collecting pay and bennies for playing pinochle. Back then, a lot of companies covered those shifts with part-timers who wanted to go full-time (because they were more likely to actually show up for a 4-hour shift in the middle of the night), with one or two full-timers as lead men people. It worked out pretty well for them.

Congrats! I have thrown lots of bags and fueled lots of airplanes for my ratings. It's pretty fun too.
