$43.99 for a table.

Hmmmm...

To be fair, you being out in the beautiful boonies of New York State is part of the reason. If you had it shipped to an area determined "easier to get to" or an increased density of stops, the ship costs would be less.

I've found them very reasonable in the past, but looking at your situation...

-Glass table
-Doesn't seem like you live nearby a store (viewing other reply)
-IKEA truck (compared to other carrier)

Yeah, it wouldn't make much sense to have it shipped. I would have sworn they had a store in Middletown (still a schlep from me, but doable), but either I was wrong or they closed it down.

No worries, though. I have a brother who lives in Connecticut and he says he'll pick it up for me at the New Haven store and bring it with him when he comes up for Thanksgiving.

I want to put the two coffeemakers and the coffee bean canisters, flavorings, and other coffee-related paraphernalia on it to free up some counter space. I'm kind of a coffee nut. I always have four or five variety of beans for guests to choose from, plus the grinder, flavorings, and so forth. They take up a lot of space.

I probably should get a license and open a cafe. Considering how many "customers" I have, it might make a nice sideline. I go through a staggering amount of coffee. But at least they bring me new and interesting beans once in a while.

Faced with a similar shipping bill, I found it made more sense to take a day off, rent a truck and drive to the store that was about 250miles away.

I used to live in Kotzebue, Alaska, way up on the northwest coast, closer to Russia than anything else. When I would order anything from outside Alaska, they would always want a physical address, something that just isn't used there. So I would give them... 10001 1/2 Whispering Pine Buffalo Waller Mountain Trail Road, Penthouse Suite.

In reality, anything shipped would just need the person ordering name, PO Box and phone number. When the item arrived at the airport the shipping company would call and let you know to come get your item.

Mrs. Steingar likes Ikea, I never did that much. I'd rather go out in the country and try and find an antique.

Ikea just opened up a store nearby, about a month or two ago. Finally got a chance to go a couple weekends back. Interesting - it's more of a lifestyle than a furniture store. I like a lot of the ideas they have. The furniture seems higher quality than what you'd find at a place like Target, but the prices are actually pretty good. If I were in the market to furnish an apartment, like back when I was just starting out, I'd be all over it. There were an interesting mix of people: folks like us, young couples, and twenty-something women and their mothers.

Oh man, I sure wish that huge Ikea next to Pixar was there when I was in college.

That place is a poor college student's dream.

We had to brave the Sears & Roebuck on the crappy side of Oakland (yes, there is a nice side).

Berkeley has a crappy side, too.

This is in Oakland (though they don't admit it on their website).

Sure they do! And right on the front page, too.
