I only happened to wander downtown today on Wednesday and got there when the weekly farmers market is going on and is open.

I come across:

  • A tiny nun from a French mission 15 miles away selling baked goods.
  • A farmer from a town 15 miles away. I bought potatoes, tomatoes, and peppers.
  • A farm from THE NEXT TOWN that was selling the organic beef and pork THEY RAISE THERE. THERE IS A HOGS AND CATTLE RANCH just 5-7 miles down the road I live on!
B)
The cattle farm says that everybody is amazed that they're there. I asked howcome we never see the piggies and the cattle. I guess we just never look in the right direction.

Dis is a long way from Duh Mare's clutches and I'm very glad about that. Lately he's been working overtime to really ruin Chicago. They'll be announcing the "surprise" of the casino at Meigs in the next few weeks. He jsut pulled a Meigs-style "get bad abotu the wrong question" thing where he wants to build the Childrens Museum in Grant Park where no building have been allowed for 150 years. Out of whole cloth he screamed that those who were against it are racists. As with Meigs he wants it because he wants it and nobody better say different.

Oh. And duh man who bulldozed an airport supposedly to protect the public sluffed off the scathing NTSB report that said the CTA tracks were so poorly maintained that the public is at risk every day. Per his usual emergency response plan, they fired the very employees who had run of breath trying the get somebody to get the tracks fixed.

yep, sounds like Chicago, to me!

It's still my favorite city, though I haven't been back there for a looong time.

mike you need to get out of the city.

come out here where you can taste the fresh air even in town. you'll get used to the cows and pigs (and their smell) real fast.

I know what you mean. I grew up in a small city (but still a city). Now I'm out quite a ways in the country. Went from chasing drunks and druggies off my porch to chasing bulls out of the back yard. Only real difference is that if I shot the bull,I'd probably feel bad later.

I am listening to a WGN story about Chicago's 2016 Olympic logo. They don't even HAVE the olympics yet!!

Chicago had to change the logo because the Olympics wouldn't let them use a torch or flame on it. The star on the logo is like one of the four stars on the Chicago flag. One star is the Chicago Fire. They should add one for Chicago River flooding all of downtown.

"Chicago: Where the river leaks and bridges fall UP."

We gotta hope that Chicago doesn't get it. Atlanta might hope that Chicago does get the Olympics so Atlanta will look good by comparison.

Remember Duh Mare's crisis plan is to always have somebody to fire.

City Boy!!!!

I got cows and corn across the street from me. Soybeans a mile away. The nearest Starbucks is in the next town. I *LIVE* in the sticks.

Well, that I got. There are soybeans and corn growing around various corners near me. There are fields of both next to teh airprot.

What got us all is having the cattle and hawgs as neighbors. That town is actually towards Chicago, rather than on the more rural side.

I have to drive forty miles to get to Atlanta proper. No cows but lots of BS.

You should hope for the Olympics in Chicago. Don't you recall where Atlanta's Olympic era mayor is now? :)

Hah ... I have to drive a mile to get to the paved road. ;)

one time i took a wrong turn when i was headed back to Ames. ended up winding through gravel roads for about 40 miles of a 85 mile trip. was never exactly sure where i was at but i knew where i was going. gotta love gravel roads and a mile square layout.

nice, I get lost often here in Pittsburgh and carry a compass in the truck. Its got me back to a road I knew everytime so far. Just as easy to get lost in the skyscrapers as it is the woods.

Hey, you're talking about my home town! I lived there for 35 years. Which is why I now live in Southeast Wisconsin. Though there's not enough beer in Wisconsin to ever make me a Packer fan. Go Bears!

I lived in Blue Grass, Iowa and Davenport, Iowa for 8 years in the 1990s. I think in Iowa only the principle meridians are paved. I had 3 miles of gravel before I hit a paved road.

Heh.

At 27 secs to the end, you can see an unX'd Meigs!

Zomebody else gonna be fired.
Mike, I don't see it. Are you talking about the parks they show after Navy Pier? I thought those were on the North side. And I certainly don't see the airport itself! Can you give a screen shot? he video is 3:10, so your shot should be at about 2:43. I see the Sears Tower, the Hancock building, and Navy Pier in the upper right. No Meigs!

That was from Rachel and Friends of Meigs. I think you can see the lights of Meigs to the right when they fly down Navy Pier at night. I thought it was that piece of land out into lake there in Seras Tower shot, but I think that's Navy Pier.

. . . 2.4sm drive to get my mail at the Post Office(until I mount a mailbox at the bottom of the hill); 7.0sm to the nearest Dairy Queen; 8.0sm to McDonald's; no gas station here; 1 little general store which also puts out a super breakfast at its six stool lunch counter; no cable(should be expanded to town in the next year); ye olde bi-pole rabbit ears gets me ABC/CBS/NBC/FOX/Public TV, so who needs 140 channels, anyway?; and the dam*** deer are nibbling on my hostas.

HR

Some sunny day I'm going to sit out on the deck, with my telephoto lens, and see how many small a/c I can capture. It seems that when a/c depart KIWI's #25 it's only 2 or 3 minutes to NAS Brunswick(must maintain 3000msl). If the pilots want to sight-see while flying at 1500 - 2999msl they'll point to the left to avoid Navy air space. That puts them right overhead of us on the islands.
