I am hesitant to write this. You see I haven't been flying much because My wife has been fighting cancer and the medical bills are higher than usual.
I promised the OPA that I would help with the Minam Lodge project to keep the lodge open for future flyers. I will have to do a lot of flying for two days from Joesph Or. to Minam and back hauling supplies and people. I have had several of you saying you wished you lived closer to help with this project. If some of you that are able would want to help me with a few dollars for a gallon of gas or two, It would be a help and appreciated a bunch. If you don't have the extra money, I sure know that feeling too. I will do the project anyway as I told the man that bought it if he would keep it open I would be willing to help him if he needed anything. If you feel inclined to help my address is: Bob Bement, 477 Bryant St. S., Vale, Oregon. 97918.
I thank you in advance if you feel like helping with this project.

It is scheduled for the 14 - 15 of April with a rain day later. I don't remember that date.

picture: on long final to land up river at the Minam Lodge strip. Over the river and the fence and 1900+ for stopping.

That strip looks like a good challenge. I'm in as long as the weather cooperates. What are we hauling? We can take this offline if you'd like.

as you know it is a roadless area, so they have some loads of materials and some of the folks that will drive to Joesph and need to fly into the lodge. As to what they are hauling I don't know the individual materials. Just know what your useful load is and subtract load you already have in the plane.

This is the info I received from the OPA Oregon Pilots Assoc.:

Put April 14 on the calendar, too. That’s the Minam Lodge Airlift. Minam Lodge, located in the Eagle Cap Wilderness, has a new owner. Mr. Barnes Ellis bought the lodge at auction last year with the intention to keep it open to the public, with an emphasis on fly-in guests. Since there is no road access, an airlift is being staged to fly materials needed for the renovation into the lodge, which is a technical canyon strip. This is a combined effort by Idaho pilots and Oregon pilots to keep this back country strip open, a cooperative effort by the IAA, OPA, and the RAF. Those who have planes that can’t land at the lodge can load the helicopter and planes that will be ferrying materials. Pilots will gather at Joseph (KJSY) starting at 8:30 Saturday morning. You can fly as many loads as you want, and everyone is invited to spend the night at the lodge.

I should be able to take about 700# per trip. Maybe a bit more once I see how the fuel use goes.

This is a one of a kind place in Oregon to fly into. Reds horse ranch was another place just up river about a 1/4 of a mile and the US forest service took it over and shut it down except for there R&R meetings. I hate to see this place end up the same way. If we help the new owner maybe he will feel like keeping it open to the public.

Bob, that looks like my kind of place! We got nothing like that here in the South..

recorded info for next biz day, Bob.

Dave as you and others know I don't usually ask for help. If you recall down at Gastons last June I gave rides all day Sat. and never asked for a cent for fuel, even after flying about 10 hours each way to get there. So this is not my usual thing to do and I feel a little uncomfortable doing it.

My ride was a definitely a memorable experience. Check on the way. :goofy:

A friend of mine from Van Couver, WA. posted this picture and I borrowed it from him. It shows the Minam lodge strip way up to the head of the valley. It also shows the little Minam that could be a dangerous mistake if you take the canyon to the right and stay with it to long. It is a box canyon, and if you stayed with it and got to deep in the canyon you might not be able to turn back.

I tried to thank all of you that sent me a donation, It was difficult as some of you don't use your name, but a handle, and some didn't send checks, but cash. If you sent me something and I didn't thank you on a PM. I want you to know that I really did appreciate all of you that helped out. I can fly all I need to for those two days and not worry about the money I would be taking that should be used on Essies care. Thanks again, I have said it before and I will say it again, Pilots are a great group of people.......

I didn't make the trip. The freezing levels and mountain obscuration forecast for areas between here and there made me think the best thing to do was not even go have a look. Maybe next time.
