We were always told we had to practice "duck and cover" so we would be ready in case of a sudden tornado or hurricane.
It was years later before I found out the real reason.

Final Approach
I come from a different background so they did not teach us the duck&cover procedure but instead they measured us (elementary school kids) for gas mask fitting every year (kids grow fast). So every year we got a slightly bigger mask number, had to try it on and do things like 100-yard dashes while breathing rubber-smelling air restricted by a charcoal filter. Aaaaah, the good old days.
