Hummingbird flight mechanics

So …. Cool video but I’m going to be a naysayer here … why did a researcher need to spend grant money to fly to another country to study a bird common to the US? And one that has lots of high speed flow viz including laser interferometry?

The hummingbird low Reynolds number unsteady airflow has been studied quite a bit.

Hummingbirds are only common to parts of British Columbia (in Canada) part of the year. Not all hummingbirds get to the USA and Canada from Central America. The video may be from other work, but "repurposed" for the presentation.

Why spend money to fly a bunch of people to the south Pacific to “look for” something you know damn well isn’t there?

Because you can.

Just south of British Columbia in Washington State we have a few species of hummingbird. Anna's Hummingbird is a permanent resident west of the Cascades. I feed them all year.
