Does anyone know the whereabouts or status of Howard Fried, former DPE, aviation author and columnist? I'd like to get in touch with him if he's still alive. I can't find any columns since about 2003, and I can't find any social media presence or recent mentions online, but I also can't find an obituary. Does anyone here know more?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, I believe he passed in 2009, age 84. Mike Busch could probably confirm that.

I never really much cared for his columns, but I did get to spend some time talking to him (this was in the middle of his battle to get is DPE back) and seemed to be a generally nice guy. That was 25 years and he was no spring chicken back then. But I start he was still alive in 2019.

Dang auto correct. I suspect I meant to see I found a reference to him saying something in 2019 unless the site I was reading recycled some old article he wrote.

Howard was a good friend of mine though we lived a couple thousand miles apart. Got to know him well through a muttual friend. With a couple other friends we attended Oshkosh together for a number of years in his later years.Flying with Howard was an unforgettable experience. I did my instrument check ride with him about 40 years ago. He moved from Michigan to Texas to live with a daughter before he passed. He wrote an article I think for flying many years ago about how he inadvertantly flew through a small tornado. Door on the Apache came off and became embeded in the vertical stabilzer. I had a printed copy but can no longer find it. Does anyone know how I can find it?

I believe that story was in one of his books.

Howard was an incredible person. He was my primary instructor despite not performing that task in 30 years prior. We became friends. I am writing a biography on him. Please share any stories you may have.
