Well I inherited old panel mounted Garmin 295. Yesterday I pulled it out and inspected. To my surprise I could any legacy usb plug. Garmin website only offers software which connects to the unit via COM port. Neither of my computers have COM ports (even the oldest one)

So basically I'm trying to figure out alternative way to update the database. Looks like there is port design some kind of memory cartridge that can be plugged in but I'm not sure if that can help in any way. Any suggestions on how to update data base on that unit?

As I recall ,the 295 had a special adapter to go between the USB port of a computer and the unit. Some of the avionics shops may still have one they may lend you.

I know Docs idea works with my old Garmin Pilot 3.

May require a null modem adapter, or a gender bender.

Here's a guy selling is 'fits-all' USB/Serial set. 9 pin, 25 pin, bender, USB, null, etc.

Is there any value for these old boxes? I have one complete with all the stuff it came with new, including the box. Works just fine. I waited too long to try to sell it. I'm convinced it's worthless. Am I wrong?
