I know I couldn't help but stare at the box seats where the plane impacted, and marvel at the incredibly bad luck it took for Galloping Ghost to end up hitting anything so precious on that enormously long race course. The odds are so infinitesimally small -- and yet it happened.

I also marveled at the resiliency of humans. Many survivors were at the races this year, and were right back in their box seats. One of the volunteers said they were worried that "those" seats near the impact point might never sell again, but that in fact they were among the first to sell.

It was a beautiful memorial service, BTW. Not a dry eye in the stands, I guarantee it.

Sorry I missed all of the memorials (I was working inside a hangar).

It was lovely. In addition to the usual tributes, they read the name of each victim, and then released a single white balloon. They did this very regularly, almost rhythmically, so that if you looked up in the sky you could see a perfect dotted line of white balloons, ascending toward the heavens.

It could have gone wrong in so many ways. The winds could have been swirling, or from the wrong direction. One of the balloons could have popped, or been dragged down by low level shear.

It all went perfectly, resulting in that precisely spaced line of balloons. Like I said, not a dry eye in the house.

Life's a risk. If we avoid anything with risk, we would end up not doing anything fun, interesting, or worthwhile.

Glad to see that they didn't cancel the air races.

With attendance down, and costs way up, the future doesn't look good, however. We will all have to support them more in 2013 if we want them to continue.
