I have an iPad mini wifi only. It gets GPS from my ADS-B portable. My phone is my backup GPS. Both run the same EFB software so routes and waypoints are shared automatically.
The most important thing to back up on any portable device is the battery. A USB port on your panel is money well spent. Keeps your devices at 100% charge in-flight and reduces the chance of overheating. A little planning during install can tame the rats nest of cables. Right angle USB connectors are helpful for neatness IMO.
