Miss Caro Bayley flew a Piper Super Cub to 30,203 feet over Miami, FLA on January 4, 1951. Appying a very liberal 500 fpm climb that would be over one hour in the climb.

Tom Downey, or other, what would be the best engine and mods to set that record?

Found this on google: http://www.womanpilot.com/past%20issue%20pages/2000%20issues/july%20aug%202000/bosca.htm

I'd say the best mod would be some kind of thunderstorm detector since AFaIK the only way you'd get a normally aspirated SuperCub up that high would be in the middle of a "small" cell. Sounds like an amazing feat.

Yeah, convection. But this was in January. Someone should research what the wx was on that day.

IIRC, it took Helios several weeks to reach that alt. It would spend all day climbing and all night slowly decending in a race track course stretching from Aust to HI. The final push for alt came with a forecast of increased winds which aided the climb. Given that it could spend almost an indefinite time reaching for alt I'm surprised it was only 96K.

In spite of my slightly dismissive tone I think it a wonderful accomplishment.

Here's a question I have: The early 1960s NASA ECHO project to launch rigid inflatable balloons to altitudes as high as 922 miles. Is it still a balloon at that alt or is it a satellite? How does it stay aloft?

I refuse to answer on the grounds that it may incriminate me.;)
I've been to 22.5 in a T172. 223KT GS. I remember thinking it sure is a long way to fall and there's only this thin little door 'tween me and it. I overshot the destination by 40 nm 'cause I wasn't thinking that fast. No, not hypox, you try descending from an alt you've never been before at a speed you've never been before.
