How common are near misses?..

I think the closest I had was:

1) flying the congested Chicago lakefront route where a twin closed head on at my altitude and we passed on our lefts - both in a right bank - at prolly 200 feet. The biggest lesson there was how fast the closing was. In a blink. Me going 150MPH. Him, too.
2) As a student wandering out to turn back on the 45 to land and getting nose to nose with a Stearman just above me. I made a very sharp bank to clear him.
3) Being just under the Bravo and having an airliner in the Bravo ahead and maybe 200 feet above and closing. We also both made a right turn.
4) Doing the Piper flight into Oshkosh and finding out that you can actually applying brakes in the air to stop climbing. There was one of our Dakotas close enough to touch above me.

I think we've all had some that we didn't know about.

Thank ja for the big sky.
