Flight Log from my Garmin 496 says I have roughly 400 hours PIC.
Tach time closer to 600. I keep RPM's under 2500 98% of the time. I am surprised at this disparity. I think flight log starts counting at 30 mph. Which should I use ?

what does your logbook say? aren't you responsible for the aircraft from engine start up to shut down?

Perhaps you should look at the definition of flight time in the regulations. It's in section 1.1 of the FAR portion of your FAR/AIM book.

As much as I hated the Hobbs meter during training, it's pretty good for keeping track of time.

I use Hobbs, or in a case where there isn't one.. A Watch..

My plane has an FMS that records the OFF and ON times. I use that for Flight Time and for Block Time (the time that goes in my logbook) I just guesstamate. I do try to be accurate though. If its JFK and it took forever to get to the runway I use what I think it took and subtract it from the OFF time. When we land and taxi right to the chalks then I just add a couple minutes to the ON time.

Works pretty good. Might be off a minute or two either way but I'd guess it averages out in the long run. I'm pretty anal about it too. If we go out and a problem occurs where we can't take off and have to go back I even put that in the logbook as we did taxi out 'with the intention of flight'.
