F/A-18 Hornet barricade landing on Nimitz, 2009.

I think it was in 1997. Anyway, 300 lbs. Holy crap!

Looks easier than catching a wire. Probably requires too much paperwork, though.

Small world. I was in VMFA-314 on the USS Nimitz when that happen. I was the Powerline Division NCOIC (Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge) I don't remember where exactly the boat was when that happen, it was a long cruise, lol...

I do remember, vividly, that we were having a hell of a time rigging the barricade. All the "rig-the-barricade" drills we did and when it happen real world...everything went to sh*t. The low fuel state of the aircraft was due to the fact that the deck crew (me, included) was getting it's butts kicked trying to rig the barricade and the plane had to keep going around...

I positive one of the comments (on YouTube) was incorrect in saying that this was Capt Slater's first trap on a carrier. If it WAS his first trap, we (the boat) would have been doing work-ups off the coast of California. If the plane had a gear problem AND we were near the coast of the US, they were have surely diverted him anywhere else other than the carrier.

Thanks for the info! I was with VAW-112 on Nimitz for the '79/80 Med I/O cruise ... THAT one was a long cruise. After leaving Naples we had 144 days at sea on Gonzo station.

Where you on the Nimitz for the filming of The Final Countdown?

What it requires is about 200 people 3 minutes of very hard work.

just to rig the barricade.

I lived in Newport News when the movie came out. I saw it in the theater, and a bunch of guys from the crew were there, too. They were hooting and hollering each time one of them or their buddies showed up on screen.

I was for parts of it. Got an autograph from Kirk Douglas.

A more notable event sadly was the ill-fated Iranian hostage rescue mission.
