Horizon P1000 digital tach compatibility with SureFly/Tach2 question

I’m considering installing a SureFly SIM on a certified aircraft that currently has a Horizon P-1000 tachometer. I know SureFly offers the TACH2 interface for the P-1000, but I’ve read a few reports of compatibility problems.

Has anyone here installed a SureFly with a Horizon P-1000? If so, did the TACH2 work properly, or did you run into tach signal/readout issues?
Thanks.

I have this setup on my Mooney. Despite them saying it wouldn't work, I had no problems with one SureFly and one standard mag with the P-1000 using the TACH2 interface.

I'm sad to see that the P-1000 isn't supported in any way now. Not sure what I'll replace it with when it goes Tango Uniform....

Thank you so much for speaking out. If you're familiar with how it was installed your Mooney would you be able to answer a question for me?
My question is how your P-1000/TACH2 was wired. The original P-1000 wiring diagram shows filtering/ferrite components in the harness, including a round toroidal core on the P-lead wires, but the SureFly diagram shows the TACH2 going directly to the P-1000 with just a wire.

Do you know if your TACH2 output goes through the original P-1000 harness and those components, or was it wired directly to the tach input?

I'll go through my notes. It's been over a year since I set this up. I'll also take a picture of my Tach2 install.

Great! Thank you
Picture of my install. Not that my left mag is the SureFly, so that is what is reflected in the wiring. The right mag remained wired as it was to the Horizon tach - it was at the p-lead at the key switch.

Thanks for the info. Since you only have the p lead from your right mag attached to the p1000 now, is there a constant red light on the tach because it is not getting the signal from the left mag anymore?

No, the horizon gets its SureFly signal from the Tach2 interface as shown. Operates as normal.

Thanks, that clears up the basic wiring. One detail I’m still trying to confirm: the original P-1000 harness shows the P-lead tach wires passing through a round toroidal/ferrite filter before reaching the tach.
When you installed the TACH2, did the TACH2 Horizon output connect into the existing P-1000 harness so the signal still passes through that original filter, or did you wire the TACH2 directly to the P-1000 input and bypass that component?
I’m trying to duplicate a known-working installation. I attached the wiring diagram from for the P1000 showing the filter.

Yes, directly to the existing P-1000 harness - no need to bypass the ferrite filter. The most difficult part was making sure I had the correct wire - had to trace it back to the switch to make sure I got the 'Left' P-Lead wire. Verify twice - cut once..LOL.

Perfect! Thank you so much for your help.
