Just got word Homeland Security is coming to the airport/my hangar tomorrow to do "a check". What does that mean and why would everyone at the airport already know about it?

What authority do they have to do this "check"? Isn't that unlawfull search?

Recently, the CAP, yes Civil Air Patrol, made a "recommendation" to the municipality that owns the airport and the hangar I rent to install new padlocks on all the hangar doors. I really don't know why the CAP is now the authority on security at the airport. I did voluntarily comply, as I saw no downside to having a new lock, but I fail to see why CAP is involved. There are too many "security cooks" in the kitchen for my liking.

Next the Girl Scouts will show up demanding I serve cookies on every flight in my Tiger.

TSA does airport security checks all the time -- it's part of their job. They check fences, and the access points through them. They check flight schools to make sure they're complying with the Alien Fligt Student rules. And if there's airline traffic, they check if the required airport security measures are in place and being done properly. None of that constitutes a search for which they need a warrant.

The only reason I can think of why they'd be checking any hangars is if that hangar provides access trough the airport fence (as many corporate hangars do). In that case, they need no warrant to see if you keep the back door locked as your airport security rules probably require.

In any event, please let us know what actually happens.

Is it TSA or DHS that's coming. I would guess that it's TSA. They visit my airport all the time. I even know their names.

I feel safer already....

Same/Same. TSA is under DHS. They were initially under FAA, then were moved to DHS.

Every time I get a call from the DHS/TSA/CBP guys about the airport. I tell them they are wasting their time, and need to focus on an actual threat. I then go into a 20 minute explanation of why no terrorist is going to use a 2600' unlit grass strip hundreds of miles from any population center with trees at each end to try and load up a general aviation aircraft with 200 lbs of explosives when they can put 10 times that in a car or truck. I then ask them if they remember the small aircraft that crashed into the building in Florida and did zero damage, or the one that crashed into the White House and did zero damage. I then ask them if they are checking all the shoreline for boats coming across on Huron or Superior, because if I was trying to enter the country illegally, it sure wouldn't be in a general aviation aircraft.

They then blabber something about they are just doing what they are told. When I ask who their boss is, so I can talk to them, they never say. I am most uncooperative.

Actually you need to read the ( NEW ) security regs all the way through... You are now required to serve whole milk, chilled to 37.5 degrees f to your passengers to go with those cookies..:yesnod::yesnod::yesnod:.

And don't even try to pull off the ol bait and switch by using 2% low fat crap...

I keep my plane at a next door to nowhere airport in MT. The hangar I'm in is in a working small FBO/Flight School so maybe it has to do with that. I dunno, They'll be there today, I'll nose around and figure out what they were up to. i was told it was DHS.

Hmmm....

What if the TSA/DHS doesn't meet the security requirements of authorized people on your airport? Like say, a private airport where you are the owner. Can you tell them to P.O. because they are a security risk? Or do they have KGB/gustappo authorization?

Just a thought...seriously.

I am a pilot, I also own a private airport. 2WY3, on my ranch... To answer your question.... It can get very complicated..:yesnod::yesnod::confused:

Generally speaking, TSA Inspectors are by definition authorized to enter airport security areas.

Not for that reason, but AFAIK, you can tell them not to enter your private property without a warrant unless you're running a "flight school" as defined by 49 CFR Part 1552, in which case you must allow access to confirm your compliance wit that part. And I don't believe a privately-owned public-access airport is "private property" requiring a warrant other than to enter places on the airport with an expectation of privacy, such as private hangars.

Just remember, you're paying all of the salaries of these inspectors checking grass strips in the middle of nowhere with borrowed money, loaned to the Chinese government.

We truly are a Nation of idiots.

There is so much wasteful spending by different alphabet agencies in the name of "security".

In addition the FAA p*sses away huge amounts of money by sending people all over the U.S. to check fueling islands at little airports. The procedures, and requirements are utterly ridiculous.

These practices are so entrenched it is hard to stop. We have allowed the growth of government and regulation far beyond what should bewould be considered reasonable.

That small aircraft destroyed a copy machine. Don't tell me that a small aircraft can't do any damage!
