Background. My son is 21. He had full neuropsych testing at age 14 due to some school issues. He was diagnosed with mild ADD, anxiety, and visual
tracking issues. He underwent therapy for the visual tracking issues and now has a normal exam. He also had new neuropsych
testing done about six months ago and was shown to not have any signs of ADD, but did show signs of slow cognitive tempo, which he was attributing to being very deliberate in his exam He took an SSRI, never consistently, and had 2 prescription for Vyvanse filled 4.5 years ago. Finished high school and pretty much med free for 2-3 years. He wants to fly and is trying to get his medical. He is doing great now. Working part time and full time college (getting a 4.0 with no meds or accommodations). Due to his history, he has been referred for a HIMS exam in Ann Arbor (John Melanovich). I haven’t heard that getting the right hymns examiner is extremely important but cannot find hardly any reviews. We have previously been referred to John Dsurney in Tampa (was told he was a real good person to see). Looking for general advice before my son sets up his HIMS exam and specifically looking for anybody who knows anything about any of these providers. Also wondering what a typical cost is for this type of exam.

You definitely want to interview/do a consult with various HIMS AMEs prior to committing, or getting the exam. And speaking first hand you definitely want somsone that has navigated complex cases. Dr. Bruce Chien is not too far, I think in Chicago?? There are others around the country that are very good at this, communicate well about the process and even know folks at the FAA that can at least give a heads up to reviewers. Won’t change the ultimate outcome, but at least might be willing to listen to a respected peer about the reaility of your son’s situation vs. just being in the review pile.

Best of luck!
