Hilarious Confrontation: Airport Police Versus Skunk at KVNY!

Skunks are like cats. They do what they want and you let them do what they want ..

Skunks are mostly nocturnal, unless disturbed or sick you hardly see them in the daytime. I would think the skunk would be content making it's way to another location.

Nothing wrong with the police car trying to push him along. Since we have a dog I really don't like skunks around.

Well...I missed the part where the police car ran him over!

Van Nuys 16R is awesome if you don't mind tons of traffic, on the radio all the time, and dodging Hawker / Citation wake turbulence.

They needed Buddy (my shepherd) to take care of the situation!

The vast majority of skunks seen out during the day are hungry mothers, and this is the right time of the year for that...at least around here the mothers give birth in May.

Also, referring to them as "nocturnal" animals is a bit of a misnomer. Skunks, along with many of mother nature's other "critters" are crepuscular, not nocturnal. Besides, it's a lot more fun to say "crepuscular creature" than it is "nocturnal animal".

Should transplant a couple coyotes from KSAF. They run alongside the aircraft playing. You'd get a hearty laugh out of anyone trying to scare them off with a cop car horn.

Looks like one of our OPS cars, not PD. I'll check :)

I bet you have been waiting most of your adult, (well lets not get carried away) life to use that word!!!!

Skunks are the number 1 carrier of rabies. If you see a skunk out in the open during the day like this, most likely its sick, stay far away from these.

That's my understanding as well.

OWT guys. Google it and you'll find multiple sources, including a few state conservation dept sites, that address the topic.

Yeah, you better not get carried away!

I had both a raccoon and a skunk as pets when I was a kid (at different times). The skunk was "de-bagged" of course. They were both really cool pets. The skunk was extremely clean, smart, very trainable and a lot of fun. He was litter box trained.

It was often hilarious when a new person walked into our house and saw him. Some, especially women, would be back outside in the blink of an eye.

The raccoon used to ride on my shoulder everywhere I went on my bike. I'd ride up to the city park pool, he'd be on my shoulder. I'd go swimming all afternoon. He'd hang out in the trees. I'd call him when I was leaving and he'd come down and hop on my shoulder.

Just call me Jethro.

The raccoon story has a sad ending though. He wasn't a "legal pet" i.e. he's was taken from the wild, not bought from a licensed seller. The conservation agent saw me riding thru town with him one day, called dad and the next day came down to take him away from me. Dad had warned me so I just let Rocky go. He was hanging out in the huge pecan trees when Barney arrived. "There he is" I said pointing to him "you can see he's wild and not a pet." (I was probably 10 or 11 and already had a severe anti-authority attitude developing :) )

That bastard made me call the coon out of the tree so he could take him.

I would really like to have a skunk again. Chris thinks I'm nuts.
