Wha? You mean you don't think there are people surfing craigslist looking for people to give their plane to? Or at the very least let someone use it FOC for primary training?

What's it cost to ask? :dunno:

-Your dignity.
-About 10 minutes of your time.
-Showing the world that you have a fundamental misunderstanding of how "it" works.

If I Handed him the keys to a 15GPH airplane, his PPL would cost him about 3 times as much over renting a Cessna 150.

If I gave it to him, double that.

Based on what? I'm sure a lot of pilots play the lottery yet they get to keep their medical.

What precisely is "it" anyway and how does "it" work?

The person sounds like a crackpot in today's society of no deviation from the norm without being labeled a nutcase. However in reality, it's a pretty smart idea. What is actually wrong with asking and possibly having someone else foot the bills? It's no different than playing the lottery or getting a better paying job.

Playing the lottery is also a sport for morons. I'm not sure I can answer the rest without going to the SZ.

I don't think this guy is overly crazy, just going about it in the wrong way. He needs to get out to the airport and try...

I have only paid for a rental one time since getting my PPL, the rest of the hours have been amassed flying friends rides! I think that is as good as any lottery, I get flight time, only have to pay for fuel and help with oil changes and such and get to fly with a friend whenever possible.

I'm letting my co-worker use my plane at no cost, in order to get his license. I guess it was my way of trying to pass along some of the joy that I've found in aviation. No way I would let just any person off the street borrow my plane, however.

I guess you city folks or flat landers don't know how it works in Bonners Ferry Idaho.

It is a very tight aviation community where I'll wager every pilot /owner knows every body on the field. Plus I know 2 that would love to have a CFI and a student exercise their 172s.

their E-Mail is on the way, I don't know they watch Craigslist.

Before you 'cuse someone of being a "city folk" or "flat lander" you might want to check OP's location and D-> distance from 65S (He may just have the airport identifier memorized because he visits there often...really often). :D

I personally think it's ridiculous to beg for a free plane on craigslist. But hey, it's the internet and why the hell not? I'll give him bonus points over people who play the lottery since he didn't actually have to pay for it. I think the guy is very "doesn't know what he doesn't know" about airplane ownership and is living a pipe dream looking for someone who has a plane and "would like to give it away". Bill Gates and Warren Buffet don't look to "give away" $15K-$40K airplanes to random people on the internet (That's just the way "it" works ) and especially not because " I've said for to many years that I would like to learn to fly". Hey, it's the internet and as long as craigslist will let him beg, they'll be providing me with entertainment so it's a win/win. I think he's nuts but I hope someone plants the keys to a brand new T182 in his hands and sends him in to the sky. Like my title said... "Here's to Hoping!"

Check your map, Spokane is the craigslist that covers Bonners Ferry, it a hour flight or less from one to the other.

I've been to Bonners Ferry at least a dozen times over the past 2 years, no need to check my map. I was talking about ME, there and KSZT are two of my favorite stops in panhandle Idaho and there are some GREAT CFI's in the area. This guy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forrest_Bird has a great setup in the area too.

So, let him take lessons in your aircraft.

Um... Yeah.. About that.. Anybody crazy enough to think someone is going to give them a plane for no good reason is.. um.. Well my plane is unavailable for freebies at this time. Here's the list of folks that can do primary flight training in my plane

- My Wife
- The guy who buys it from me.

Here's the list of people I'm giving it too.

-My wife, in my will.

I take the kids in the flight school up from time to time, let them work the controls and let the fresh PPL pilots that hang out at the airport go up and log pic but.. I know em or I'm with em, If my CFI was in a pinch and asked me for the keys to train a pilot in, he wouldn't have to ask twice. Some random guy beggin' for free planes on craigslist... no.

I think he would be better to go down to the Airport and become friends with a few Aircraft Owners, but I really don't see anything that odd about this. He is insane if he believes that someone will give him a plane. With that said there are a lot of planes around my area that just sit. I know several pilots that would love to let someone use their aircraft so long as they pay for fuel and have their own renters insurance.

It took me 20 years before i got my plane and a PPL. I traded the 170 for a basket case 182. Three years and money I didn't have to get it into flying shape. I am a very helpful guy and I feel for this person that wants to learn to fly. But I wouldn't take a chance and let someone learn in my airplane. I have only let one person, even fly my airplane in the past 16 years. That was Tony Condon at Gastons a couple years back. I worked to hard for someone to wreck it and tell me sorry!
