A helo pilot friend of mine is currently unemployed due to budget cuts of civilian military training contracts. He was in the Army as a helo pilot training other pilots when that program ended and was replaced with civilian contractor instructors. He then became a contract instructor, well that gig lost funding also so now he is looking for work.

He is home now looking for helo instruction work, helo flying, etc. He is an outstanding young man with all the "right stuff", IMHO. He can fly about anything and does. He borrows several local aircraft and flies them to stay current. He is extremely well thought of locally.

Any employment ideas I can pass on? :dunno:

Thanks in advance for any tips. ;)

Airlines are hiring. Might sound like a stretch with his background, but I know a few former Navy helo guys who are flying 121 now.

If he is willing to relocate have him check out Metro Aviations website, they are always looking for EMS pilots.

He might want to check out a few of the Helo websites for job opportunities. I've seen them on HAI (rotor.com), Vertical Reference (verticalreference.com), and Rotorcraft Pro (justhelicopters.com). The latter has a FREE magazine with great rotor porn. The website has a section for jobs.

Which airlines?

Thanks for the tip! :D

Delta, United, American all have former Helo pilots among their ranks. I was a Marine Cobra driver way back when. It's harder for the Army guys as they start out in Helicopters and thus have less formal fixed wing time but it's not impossible. Refer him to www.aptap.org

Really depends on what he's qualified in, how far he's willing to travel and what pay he's willing to accept. I imagine he's multi-engine IFR helo rated with a substantial amount of time. The door is wide open for him. Helicopter industry is short pilots all around.

He could fly CFI at 30K per year, tours or utility at 40-50K per year, EMS, news gathering or law enforcement 55-75 per year, GoM at 55-130K per year, overseas contract at 150-200K per year.

Sounds like he was part of the S-3 cuts that happened 2 months ago. I almost went with them but I could see the writing on the wall. I'd be out of work right now as well. Military contracts are good. You ride the wave of war but when it's over you're scrambling for work.
