Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. My Name is Roudy Patton. I'm from Arkansas and just starting on my private pilot. I will be using the ASA books for my course. I was wondering what kind of headset would be best? I will be flying in a Cessna 172. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. :D I hope this is the spot were this thread goes.

Hi Roudy. Welcome to POA! Are you from anywhere near Gastons?

Welcome!

As far as headsets, the only rule is to get one with ANR -- you don't want your hearing to be as damaged as mine when you get to be my age, because we didn't have that technology for my first six or seven thousand hours. Beyond that, you need to try them on your head, because everyone's head is shaped differently, and what fits me just fine may be like a tight c-clamp on you.

Welcome to POA Roudy. Don't spend a pile of money on things you think you might need to get your ticket. Collaborate with your flight instructor, he/she will steer you in the right direction, it's what you are paying them for.

John

Roudy welcome to POA, Head sets are a personal preference kind of thing. I like light speeds.

I just want to say thanks for all the input and for everyone being so friendly.

Hey, "friendly" is what we do here... and in an airplane, northeast Arkansas is a quick hop from Gaston's, where we'll look forward to seeing you in June!

Keep us posted on your flight training progress- a lot of exceptional folks here, good advice and ideas all the time.

Isn't everyone named Roudy from Arkansas?:lol:

It depends on how serious you are about this. Most all the cheap ones are the same; uncomfortable and junk. If you have the money, get a Lightspeed Sierra or Zulu; they also make lower cost ones. You'll eventually need 2 sets so you can buy cheap or good first depending on your finances.

Use the set that the school makes available for a while and try out different ones when/if you can before you invest in your own.

And welcome to POA

Was gonna say the same thing - they usually have extras at no charge, use them for my passengers all the time. I've tried the Bose and they're nice but I'm not picky having worn these things my whole career on the firing range.

I agree. If money is an issue, put your money towards flight lessons, the written test fee, etc. My instructor told me not to buy my own headset until closer to the checkride because a lot of people take flying lessons and then don't complete their training. Best to wait on buying all the "gear" until you have a few more hours in your log book.

Welcome to POA.

Find yourself a used ANR set on eBay, or use the flight school set and buy yourself a new pair of Zulu 2 and an iPad when you pass your checkride!
