The ultimate headline has now been officially penned:

I've tried it with my big red dragon burner, but it doesn't go all that fast and if it's cold outside you can still get refreeze.

You can melt snow with a nuclear bomb too, but I don't think that detonating one in the US is exactly legal.

Google resulted in this tidbit:

"In the United States, private ownership of a flamethrower is not restricted by federal law, but is restricted in some of its states, such as California, by state laws (c.f. California Health and Welfare Codes 12750-12761, Flamethrowing Devices) CA H&W Code on line

In California, unlicensed possession of a flame-throwing device —statutorily defined as "any non-stationary and transportable device designed or intended to emit or propel a burning stream of combustible or flammable liquid a distance of at least 10 feet" H&W 12750 (a)— is a misdemeanor punishable with a county jail term not exceeding one year OR with a fine not exceeding $10,000 (CA H&W 12761). Licenses to use flamethrowers are issued by the State Fire Marshal, and he may use any criteria for issuing or not issuing that license that he deems fit, but must publish those criteria in the California Code of Regulations, Title 11, Section 970 et seq. CA Regs (CA H&W 12756) (definitions and scope, administration, enforcement and penalties)"

So, I guess you can't do that in California. Elsewhere it could be a different story.

I bought a sheet of plywood the other day that was stamped:

Cutting or sanding this may release sawdust which has been shown to cause cancer in California (or something along those lines).

It only causes cancer in Cali? Thank goodness I dont live there.

It's a byproduct of the serpentine rock found here which contains asbestos. Apparently, it must be uptaken by trees.

Asbestos is closely related to serpentinite, and occurs in occasional outcrops around the Coast Ranges naturally. The most well known outcropping is located south and west of New Idria in the Clear Creek area, about 100 miles south of Oakland. Serpentinite is VERY common in the coast ranges -- every time you see a road cut with green rocks and shiny surfaces around here, that's it. There are big outcroppings on the Marin coast, and a massive one on the Cuesta Grade north of SLO.

I don't have any info on the prop 65 warning for wood products, but I doubt it has to do with the serpentinite or asbestos. Most of the wood here is imported these days (except for redwood and some pine/fir, though most of that comes from further north). More likely, it has to do with solvents and glues used in making plywood, which would have nothing to do with California except that the disclosure is required here.

And the standard wording doesn't say it causes cancer in California. It says it was determined to cause cancer BY the state of California. Which only means no one else looked.

No, this headline does not hold a candle to

Sawdust is an irritant. The dust can be inhaled. Chronic irritation/inflammation is one cause of cancer (not necessarily a BIG cause, but a cause nonetheless)… Thats how asbestos causes cancer - it's not going to magically rearrange your DNA, but the fibers cause a chronic inflammation that leads to it in some patients.

Kansas towns have great headline names, you might remember "Oblong Man Marries Normal Woman."

For real in our local paper was "Hunter in Better Condition After Being Shot."

Or there's the one about the guy in a mental institution that escaped after a conjugal visit:

"Nut Screws and Bolts"

Ron Wanttaja

Missouri, like most states, has its share of strange town names including
Peculiar
Normal
Half Way
Cleaver
Climax
Conception
Fair Play
Tightwad

So you can have headlines such as "Normal Man Marries Peculiar Woman" or "Tightwad Man Marries Half Way Woman."
