HBONow just showed up on our AppleTV and offered a free month, which we took.

We have no intention of continuing after the month is out and have our calendar marked to cancel it - $14.99/mo is just a bit too much to add to what we already pay for Netflix and Hulu+. We normally consume HBO stuff once it eventually migrates to Netflix.

We just watched "Going Clear" - an expose´ of Scientology. Well done if somewhat long at two hours.

Anything else we should try to catch this month? We decided to pass on "Game of Thrones" as being a bit violent for our tastes. We do like comedy, drama, sci-fi, documentaries and the like, just nothing too gratuitously violent or gory.

I know taste in this sort of thing is very individual, but I'm just looking for gems we might otherwise miss.

Thanks in advance!

I subscribed to HBO maybe 5-6 years ago to see what I was missing and it was playing the same movies from when I was a teenager.

We got into entourage but eventually cancelled as there wasn't much that justified the cost.

We stream from YouTube, Amazon prime and one other that I'm at a loss to come up with right now. Lots of good movies for free.

We used to subscribe to Netflix and enjoyed house of cards but not much else. Most of their offerings were movies no one wanted to watch when they first came out much less decades later.

Verizon seems to give me free hbo previews at least a couple times each year for a month or so. I don't even ask for them.

Each time i go through the list dvr things for later and maybe i'll eventually get to them.

Our Netflix experience is very different.

We get both streaming and DVD's. Right now on DVD we're working through the most recent Academy Award winners. "The Imitation Game" right now, "Interstellar" was the last one, and before that "Birdman" and "Boyhood".

Streaming we've been watching Archer, Halt and Catch Fire, MadMen, and DareDevil.

Anyway, we feel we definitely get our money's worth from NetFlix.

We have HBO and I really can't tell you why.:dunno: Most of the movies are from the 80's or 90's! We don't go out to the movies very often, maybe a couple times a year, but I seldom watch anything on HBO, Showtime or Cimemax.:dunno: HBO is now included with our cable/Internet subscription at the beach, I'll probably cancel it at the house. :D

I assume you've seen Band of brothers? You can watch or rewatch all 10 episodes.

I get HBO only for Game of Thrones, which in my opinion is as well done a fantasy series as BoB was a war serious (with due respect to the latter, which had subject matter of much more significance). But it is often overtly violent and sexual, so if that's not your thing, you may not enjoy it.

We had it for a weekend and I taped about a half dozen movies. Watched the latest X-Men movie last night, pretty good. Most of what was on was the same as the last time we got it for free for a weekend.

I'd lonely get it for Game of Thrones, which I love.

I saw that too. I thought it was disingenuous. One of the main people testifying was clearly a liar...one minute he says this > then he changes him mind to something different, and in each case he's emphatic. They should have edited that part out and maybe it would have been more credible.

I loved Band of Brothers, I watched when it aired and recorded it and watched it again! :D

I've had family acquaintances in the past who were hard core OT Scientologists.

I'd stay far, far away if I were you. Glad we don't communicate with them anymore.

Off topic a bit, but about gratuitous violence...

We had heard good things about "Daredevil", a Netflix original based on the Marvel character.

Seems creative and well acted and executed, but by the second episode the gory violence was just too much. And NOT cartoonish. Watch it and you'll know the scene I mean.

Not sure why people seem drawn to this level of violence and gore, but it is what it is.

Well, don't watch true blood with your free trial.

The eye thing? My brother had me watch the first two episodes. I was underwhelmed but I'm not much of a Superheroes fan. But if that bothered you I rescind my suggestion to watch Game of Thrones. No offense meant by that.

Yes, the eye thing.

Karen said, "OK, that's enough! I'm just not into this".

And I was in complete agreement.

And we made the decision to pass on Game of Thrones for that reason.

It's not so much that we're wusses, though maybe we are. It's just that feeling uncomfortable is not high on the list of reasons we watch TV and movies.

Do you know if they're showing the Mayweather v Pacquio fight on Saturday?

I had HBO pretty much for series like the Sopranos, Deadwood, and Rome, and their special series like From Earth to the Moon, and Band of Brothers. Except for Game of Thrones I didn't much care for their programming when all those ended so I dropped it a few years ago.

Thanks to all who responded.

Ended up just watching three John Olivers - two were great and one was so-so.

We watched a few episodes of Silicon Valley and it especially did not grab Karen. I actually prefer "Halt And Catch Fire" on Netflix.

In any case I cancelled our subscription, as I had intended. We have plenty to watch as it is, and don't mind waiting for things to make it to Netflix or Hulu or Amazon.

Thanks again!

Likely the one free month deal lasts while it is exclusive to Apple - aka the current Game of Thrones season. As a note, you can subscribe from any apple device/apple account, and stream it to any web browser. I couldn't get it to work on Roku/Fire Tv, but no problem on Windows + Google Chrome.

several years ago I subscribed to watch the Band Of Brothers mini-series... cancelled right after the last episode...
