Thi was inspired by Henning's suggestion in another thread that a fair percentage of teenager's first cars get totaled. Looking back I cany only think of one of my friends who totaled a car, when he was 15, no less.

I reduced a car's value to $50 once.
Almost totaled but the guy still gave me $50 for it. I was at fault.
I was a new driver on wet pavement going down hill coming out of an alley, hit the brakes and slid head on into an oncoming car.

I was also in a wreck that wasn't my fault.
I was 2nd to the last (so first car hit) in a small 4 or 5 car pileup.
It was totaled.

I've totaled 1 car, when I was 16. I still swear it wasn't my fault but whatever that was over 20 years ago. I've totaled a snowmobile.for sure my fault and man was it fun in the process.

I have had ONE vehicle totaled. My Suburban was struck by a moving van speeding through the industrial park. I didn't quite know what happened other than suddenly getting a windshield full of truck and then my air bags went off. The sheriff's department investigator said the truck spun my Suburban 180 degrees and drove it back 25 feet until it struck a curb preventing it from going further. He used this to determine the truck was going well in excess of the 25 MPH speed limit.

Amusingly that morning I was on my way to work thinking "Should I get rid of this thing and get something more fuel efficient." I had just decided that it was running OK and I would continue driving it until it died. I didn't realize that would only be another two miles.

I replaced it with a Chevy Avalanche which I drove until it started to become a maintenance issue (and developed some bizarre behaviors like the instrument cluster intermittantly dying and the climate control going bonkers). I traded it in on my first non-4WD in 28 years, a Chevy Volt.

Usually I drive cars until they fall apart. My vehicles:

1968 Ford LTD (admittedly I didn't get this until 1977). It pretty much died my senior year in college to be replaced by:

1980 Datsun 200SX. I gave this one to a friend's mother who was in desparate need of a car when I replaced it.

1986 Nissan Stanza 4WD Wagon - This one literally had pieces falling off it when I got rid of it.

1994 Suburban - struck by a truck in 2004

2004 Avalanche - Driven until 2014.

2014 Volt. I don't think this one will have the longevity of the others, but we'll see.
