As proclaimed by the Parliament of Canada:
A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed – to be observed on the 2nd Monday in October.

Mrs. Steingar is Canadian, so happy thanksgiving from Steinholme. I'd love to do a bit of Canadian travel during the America Thanksgiving, but Mrs. Steingar hasn't a passport and isn't bloody likely to get one soon.

She a US citizen, or green card holder? If green-card, no passport required.

She has dual Canadian and US citizenship and thus needs a current passport from one or the other. Alas, she has neither. I admit I am travel challenged, at least to distant shores. My money goes down the maw of my aircraft instead.

Actually, she needs a US passport.

Canada doesn't care, but entering the United States as a US citizen on anything but a US passport is a major-league no-no. So, she can, of course, enter Canada on a Canadian passport (or birth certificate for that matter!) or a US Passport, she needs the US passport to return to the United States.

An "enhanced" driver's license works, too, at least overland at the New York borders. It costs about $30.00 and takes about five minutes to get at the local DMV (or about 8 hours downstate). You have to bring your birth certificate, Social Security card, a few other documents, and your checkbook to the the DMV to get it.

The DMV has been pushing them pretty hard, undoubtedly because of the extra thirty bucks the state gets in return for pretending to examine your documents for seven seconds.

Enhanced driver's licenses are also available to residents of Michigan, Vermont and Washington. They can also be used for passage to Mexico and most of the Caribbean nations, I am told, but not by air.

Why not by air? No idea. Either the document proves you're who you say you are or it doesn't, one would think. But what do I know...

Yup, and she isn't too bloody likely to get one any time soon, all things considered.

You made me go look...my Canadian passport expires in January, so I gotta get on renewing that.

Damn thing is $260 to renew for 10 years! And it'll take a month to get back to me!

Last time I did the US one it was less than half that. Neener neener!

Of course, if I wanted a new American passport I imagine right now I couldn't get one for love or money, so I suppose you're one up on me.

The US Postal Service is not even accepting passport applications for processing right now.

The toughest part of the Canadian passport renewal process down here is the pictures.

The Canadian passport photo specs are different than the US ones...different size, lots of other stuff.

Last time around, I found out that Sears Portrait Studios had a template available that they could output Canadian spec passport photos. Well, the Sears here went Tango Uniform in their last round of closures, so I called the one in Knoxville and was informed that the company that ran all of the Portrait Studios is now Tango-Uniform too...Doh!

Good news is, the Canadian consulates know this is a problem, so I called up the Atlanta Consulate, and got a call back with the name of a place locally that can take care of me! I can even scan the pictures I get and e-mail them to 'em and they'll make sure they're good to go before I send them off to Ottawa!
