To those of you still laboring for a living,...

Enjoy the day off, folks!

As a retiree from a vital utility, thanks to my old friends who are still on the job on holidays. My computer would not be running and on line without them. I would be anticipating a cold lunch out of a defrosting refrigerator.

I have worked every one of the legal holidays at least once, not necessarily on the day shift, so I was often home during the day with the family. I often wished that I worked for a big corporation or the government, but in reality, I chose to stay with the electric company. Two government agencies offered me better pay (I had done contract work for them) as they needed my skills on staff. I turned them down. I was more valuable where I was, and ultimately, my skills took me to even higher pay.

Without us at work, the airports and ATC would be on emergency generators, traffic would be restricted, and control towered airports would be restricting GA flights.

On some things, I have a very poor sense of humor.

PS
Yesterday, the restaurant that we ate at had buffet style, to minimize the staff that would work the weekend. I thanked them for being there for us.

Today, in a different restaurant, will be the same. If a cook comes out to place a fresh pan of food, I will thank him too.

To me, this is a big deal, and the reaction of the wait staff indicates they agree. Most are surprised, and some tell me that some customers are insulted that there is not a full staff, and table service is not an option.

45 years at the front line of keeping the lights on.:):):)

Day off? I wish. As holidays go though, I’ll take the holiday pay vs sitting at home and posting on POA for no pay at all.

Lets ignore that OSHKOSH is not this week.

If you had a reserved camper on site at OSH this week, and the boss asked you to work overtime this week...YES, or NO?

My answer after I became a contract employee was NO!

The event was Sun N Fun, accommodations were tent under our Cessna wing, and I refused to take a cell phone, in case they needed me. The power company ruined enough of my vacations when I could not say no.

edited to add:
He promised to have a charter jet fly me from Lakeland to BWI, meet me with a car to the power plant, and when the unit was back on line drive me to the jet, and back to Lakeland. Sounds like less than a day lost at SNF, but I have had 17 hour long events, and once there, there is no leaving. Easily 2 days lost, plus tired and groggy when I arrive back.

He had to call the next best man if anything happened. Fortunately for them, nothing happened.:)

Well yeah, if there was something special going on this week then I’ll take the day off. But Labor Day? Not really a holiday I reserve for big plans for.

My family and about 40 friends went to the beach every year together over Labor day. My first trip with that group was 1953. My wife went with the boys 4 year because I was required to work. This is only the second time since retired that I have missed, just too old to be safe in either sand or waves.

Since retirement it’s just another Monday.

Well, sure, since I retired I no longer get any holidays or vacations or weekends
